Looking at the current scenario of technological development and the participation of Indian students at a global level, the efforts of the top engineering colleges in India can be appreciated. In India, B.Tech (UG Engineering Course) is considered one of the most desirable courses in the science stream because of the career opportunities in India and abroad for an engineer. The students can pursue engineering after their schooling in the science stream, but the major issues faced by them are which is better for them, whether the college near their home will be good, or whether the college suggested by someone else would be worth spending the highly energetic years of their lives at.

  • The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the apex body that monitors all the facilities for technical education in India to promote engineering at the highest level.
  • According to the AICTE, there are a total of 5860 institutions in 2022-23 that offer engineering courses at the diploma, UG, and PG levels.
  • 45 new institutes were added in the last year, and a total of 2369831 students got admission to their desired engineering colleges in 2022-23 academic sessions.
  • IIT’s and NIT’s are the top government engineering colleges in India. Along with some of the state universities and private engineering colleges, they are also performing well in the IIRF Engineering Ranking 2023.

Diploma in engineering is of 2 to 3 years duration and is known as a polytechnic. The undergraduate engineering program (B.E/B.Tech) is a 4 year program, and the postgraduate engineering program (M.E/M.Tech) is a 2 year program.

JEE Main: JEE Main 2024 will be administered in two phases in January and April by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Except for the drawing section of Paper 2 (B.Arch), which was administered using pen and paper, JEE Mains 2024 was computer-based. The application process for the renowned IIITs, NITs, and other more esteemed engineering schools in the country is called JEE Main.

BITSAT: In an online format, the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) will administer the BITSAT 2024 university-level engineering entrance exam. All qualified candidates may apply for admission to one of BITS' three campuses via the BITSAT (Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test). Every year, roughly 2 lakh candidates apply to take this exam, making it a very competitive entrance exam.

VITEEE: Under the VITEEE (VIT Engineering Entrance Exam), approximately 5000 undergraduate engineering seats are open to qualified candidates. Around 2 lakh students take the university-level exam, which is administered by VIT University, each year. The test will be administered online and will be impartial in nature.

SRMJEEE: For all qualified candidates, the SRM Institute of Science and Technology will hold the SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination (SRMJEEE). The SRMJEEE will be given by the SRM Institute of Science and Technology to all qualified applicants. For admission to the 7,000 open seats in undergraduate engineering, the SRMJEE 2024 exam will be delivered in a computer-based format. The entrance exam receives about 1 lakh applications each year.  The 125-question entrance exam is a requirement for admission to the university, and candidates must pass it to be considered. The top 1000 IIT JEE Rank holders as well as the top scorers in the national and state board exams are given direct admissions.

COMEDK UGET: The Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) administers the COMEDK UGET exam for admission into the engineering programs offered by the private Associations of Medical, Dental, and Engineering colleges in the state of Karnataka.  The entrance examination will be held across various exam centers in India. Under B.Tech, there are about 20,000 seats available for enrollment.

JAM: On behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), the Government of India, the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) conducts the Joint Admission Test for MSc (JAM), an all-Indian level online entrance exam, on a rotating basis each year. Integrated PhD programs are offered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and other postgraduate programs at IITs. IIT JAM is held to provide admission to candidates for these programs. JAM scores are also accepted for admission to MSc programs at a number of National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs).

GATE: A nationwide exam known as the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is authorized and administered in eight different parts of India. On behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, National Coordinating Board, and Department of Education, the GATE Committee, which is made up of professors from IISc and seven other IITs, administers the test. The GATE exam is designed to gauge students' proficiency in engineering and science-related subjects. The GATE scorecard is also utilized by numerous PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) to hire candidates for prestigious positions at Indian Oil, GAIL, and Hindustan Petroleum, among others.

JEE Advance: The only entrance exam that allows students to enroll in undergraduate programs at IIT leading to bachelor's degrees, integrated master's degrees, or dual degrees in engineering, science, or architecture is JEE Advanced.  In addition to passing JEE Main, candidates must also pass the Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced, a national-level exam, in order to join the ranks of IIT alumni. The top 2.5 lakh JEE Main candidates are given seating for this entrance exam on a yearly basis.  Any of the seven IITs—IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Roorkee—as well as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore—conduct the exam under the auspices of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).

UPESEAT: The University of Petroleum & Energy Studies Engineering Aptitude Test is known by its full name, UPESEAT. Every year, the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) administers the exam online in order to admit qualified applicants to its various BTech programs. It is a privately funded, AICTE and UGC recognized university. The JEE Main scorecard, the board merit list, and UPESEAT are used to determine admission to UPES. The University fills 80% of its seats through UPESEAT, with the remaining 20% being filled based on Class 12 and JEE Main scores.

SET: Symbiosis International (Deemed University) administers the Symbiosis Entrance Test (SET) to candidates seeking admission to Symbiosis institutes. The SET exam is a requirement for enrollment in undergraduate programs in management, law, engineering, economics, mass communication, computer studies, and liberal arts. The exam for B.Sc. Culinary Arts was previously offered, but it was discontinued for this course in 2021. The SET exam application form, admit card, and results were all only accessible online; an offline application process was not supported.

AMUEEE: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) holds the Aligarh Muslim University Engineering Entrance Examination (AMUEEE) in order to grant admission to engineering and architecture programs offered in the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, such as BTech/BArch/BE. The exam is open to applicants who want to pursue their undergraduate engineering degree at AMU.

Tripura JEE: The Tripura Board of Joint Entrance Examination administers the TJEE, also known as the Tripura Joint Entrance Examination, as a state-level test for admission to various engineering, agricultural science, veterinary science, fisheries science, and other professional degree programs. The Tripura Joint Entrance Examination serves as a point of entry for applicants seeking admission to the above-mentioned list of courses in various streams.
