The Central University of Rajasthan (CURAJ), established by the Central Universities Act, 2009, represents a significant milestone in the Indian government's initiative to decentralize and elevate the quality of higher education across the nation. Situated in the semi-arid landscape of Bandarsindri, Ajmer, the university has, in its first fifteen years of existence, transformed from a fledgling academic project into a premiere hub for multidisciplinary research and sustainable development. Managed and fully funded by the Government of India, CURAJ serves as an egalitarian institution that prioritizes access for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds while maintaining a trajectory toward global academic outreach. The university’s institutional identity is deeply rooted in its vision of "Sustainable Development through Excellence in Education, Innovation, and Performative Societal Change," a mandate that informs its research priorities, infrastructure development, and curricular design.
Currently functioning under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Anand Bhalerao, the institution has secured an "A++" grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and consistently features within the top echelons of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The university's governance structure, which includes the President of India as the Visitor and Dr. K. Kasturirangan as the Chancellor, ensures a high level of accountability and strategic foresight.5 Spanning a sprawling 518-acre green campus, CURAJ has emerged as a leader in environmental stewardship, integrating renewable energy and water conservation into its core operational philosophy.
The academic framework of the Central University of Rajasthan is organized into twelve distinct schools, which collectively house 36 academic departments and one community college. This structure is intentionally designed to promote interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research, moving away from the traditional siloed approach to higher education. The following table delineates the comprehensive school-departmental matrix that defines the university’s academic reach:
School of Study | Associated Academic Departments |
School of Architecture | Department of Architecture; DDU Kaushal Kendra |
School of Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy | Department of Chemistry; Department of Pharmacy |

The School of Architecture is specifically envisioned as a center of excellence for sustainable development, emphasizing regenerative architecture and the documentation of traditional wisdom in arid regions. Its focus areas—waste, water, energy, and human productivity—align with the regional needs of Rajasthan while contributing to the global discourse on environmental resilience. Similarly, the School of Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy serves as a bridge between pure science and applied industrial applications, with both the Chemistry and Pharmacy departments receiving support under the DST-FIST (Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure) scheme.
The School of Engineering and Technology, established in 2010, targets the production of high-caliber engineering graduates equipped with moral values and technical expertise in advanced fields such as Biomedical Engineering and Cyber-Physical Systems. Furthermore, the School of Earth Sciences has become a vital node for atmospheric research, climate pollutant modeling, and glacier studies, addressing critical environmental challenges of the 21st century.
The Central University of Rajasthan offers a diverse portfolio of academic programs, ranging from integrated five-year undergraduate-postgraduate tracks to specialized doctoral research. A cornerstone of the institution’s academic strategy is its Integrated M.Sc. programs, which are designed to identify research potential early and provide a robust foundation in core sciences.
In the first and second years (Semesters I-IV) of the Integrated M.Sc. programs, students are exposed to four core subjects, ensuring a broad multidisciplinary understanding. In the third year (Semesters V-VI), students select one major subject, analogous to an honors degree, in which they pursue their M.Sc. degree during the final two years. This model allows for flexibility and ensures that students develop deep expertise in their chosen field while maintaining a cross-disciplinary perspective.
The university’s program offerings for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 academic cycles include over 80 courses. The table below highlights the diversity of postgraduate and innovative programs currently offered at the university:

Beyond traditional academic degrees, CURAJ has placed significant emphasis on vocational education through the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Kaushal Kendra and the Department of Vocational Studies and Skill Development. These centers are designed to meet the economic and industrial needs of both regional and national markets by integrating technical skills with general education.
The DDU Kaushal Kendra offers the Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) in Interior Design, a three-year program with multiple entry and exit points. Under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF), students can exit after one year with a Diploma, after two years with an Advanced Diploma, or complete the full degree. The Department of Vocational Studies also offers B.Voc. in Robotics and Automation, targeting the increasing demand for high-skilled personnel in the industrial automation sector. These programs are designed with a 40% general education and 60% vocational training ratio, ensuring that graduates are either employable in major firms or capable of initiating their own entrepreneurial ventures.
Admissions to the Central University of Rajasthan are highly competitive and primarily conducted through national-level entrance examinations, ensuring a transparent and merit-based selection process. The university adheres strictly to the reservation policies mandated by the Government of India, promoting social inclusion across its academic departments.
CUET-UG: The primary route for Integrated M.Sc., B.Voc., and B.Sc. B.Ed. programs.
JEE Main: The mandatory entrance for B.Tech programs in Computer Science, Electronics & Communication, and Biomedical Engineering, followed by JoSAA/CSAB counseling.

The university’s demographic profile is characterized by a significant national character; approximately 97% of the student population originates from outside the state of Rajasthan, with representation from nearly all 28 states and various foreign nations. This diversity is facilitated by the university's reliance on national testing platforms like CUET, which allows students from remote regions to compete for seats in this central institution.
Research is fundamentally integrated into the academic life of CURAJ. The institution has cultivated a vibrant research culture that is reflected in its significant extramural funding, high publication volume, and the international recognition of its faculty.
During the 2023-24 reporting period, the university managed 310 research projects with a cumulative sanctioned value of approximately ₹17,67,51,829. These projects are funded by premier national and international agencies, including the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
To further stimulate a research ecosystem, CURAJ provides seed grants through the University Funded Research Program (UFRP). This internal scheme offers up to ₹5.0 lakhs over a two-year period to regular faculty members, particularly for initiating cutting-edge research in trans-disciplinary areas of humanities, social science, and engineering. The program expects deliverables such as at least one high-impact publication or a patent application, alongside the submission of a major proposal to an external funding agency.
