VPO - Ghudda, Bathinda, Punjab, India - 151401
The Central University of Punjab (CUPB) represents one of the most significant institutional outcomes of the Central Universities Act (No. 25 of 2009), a legislative initiative designed by the Parliament of India to expand the horizons of higher education and research in regions characterized by academic underservedness. Established during the 11th Five Year Plan, the university was strategically positioned in Bathinda, the heart of the Malwa region of Punjab, to serve as a catalyst for intellectual growth and socioeconomic transformation. Over the past fourteen years, the institution has transitioned from a temporary functioning base in a refurbished textile mill to a sprawling 500-acre green campus in Ghudda village, distinguishing itself as a premier research-centric university with a robust emphasis on interdisciplinary studies and technological innovation. The university’s journey is defined by its rapid ascent in national rankings, its commitment to sustainable development through a GRIHA five-star certified master plan, and its role as a "multi-cultural mini India," attracting students from 26 states and faculty from over 19 states.
The Central University of Punjab has demonstrated a consistent commitment to maintaining high academic and research standards, which is reflected in its performance across various national benchmarking platforms. The institution was accredited with an 'A+' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in its second cycle in 2023, a testament to its evolving internal quality assurance mechanisms and academic rigor. This accreditation is complemented by a sustained presence in the top tiers of the IIRF.
The university’s ranking trajectory highlights its competitiveness, particularly in specialized domains such as Pharmacy and Law, alongside its overall performance in the University category. The consistent improvement in these rankings, despite the university's relatively young age, underscores the effectiveness of its research-focused mandate and the strategic recruitment of faculty trained at prestigious national and international institutions.

The 2025 ranking of 77th in the University category and 20th in the Pharmacy category marks a significant milestone, positioning CUPB as a leading institution among the new central universities. This upward trend is further supported by the university’s high per capita research funding and its status as a forerunner in research publications relative to its peer institutions.
The academic architecture of the Central University of Punjab is designed to foster a specialized yet interdisciplinary learning environment. The university operates through 11 Schools of Study, which collectively house 31 to 35 departments. The implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 starting from the 2021-22 academic session has further refined this structure, introducing a graduate attributes-based curriculum that prioritizes research, skill development, and entrepreneurship.
The departmental structure is a reflection of the university's research priorities, covering basic sciences, applied technologies, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Each school is led by a Dean, and each department by a Head of Department, ensuring specialized governance.
