The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Pune is one of the premier institutes that is dedicated to research as well as teaching in the basic sciences throughout. It came into existence in the year 2006 by MHRD. By 2012, it was declared as an Institute of National Importance by Parliamentary Act. Being one of its kind initiative in science education in the country, the institute aims to be a Science University that is having the highest talents devoted to both teachings as well as research in a collaborated manner, with top-quality research and high-quality education.

IISER Pune started a 5 years Integrated Master’s program and a Doctoral program in Integrated Sciences inside an intellectually vibrant atmosphere of research structure. Apart from the usual classroom instruction, the institute creates student skills in areas such as scientific computational sciences, inquiry, electronics and instrumentation, problem-solving, communication skills, and workshop practices. IISER plans to develop advanced teaching as well as research labs where students will have their best opportunity to pursue various experiments as well as advanced research under the guidance of top-class faculty.

Subsequently, this shall make education and careers in basic sciences more exciting at the same time, more rewarding. The IISER Pune offers a BS-MS dual degree program. It aims at converging the conventional bachelors as well as masters degrees into much more holistic science education experience, converging the biological, mathematical, chemical, earth and physical sciences.

Research along with IISER focuses on these major areas such as mathematics, Biology, Climate Science, Chemistry, Earth and Physics. In addition to mainstream research in these areas, the following advanced research centres in selected areas, have been set up in the institute. The following specialized research centers are currently in operation at the institute, they are DBT Centre of Excellence in Epigenetics, Centre of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education-under the MHRD’s Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission for Teachers and Training, Centre for Energy Science established through DST Nano mission and National Facility for Gene Function in Health and Disease.
