Tezpur University

Napaam, Sonitpur, Assam, India - 784 028

Tezpur University stands as a quintessential example of the developmental mandate envisioned for Higher Education Institutions in Northeast India. Established on January 21, 1994, through an Act of Parliament (Act No. 45 of 1993), the university’s genesis is intrinsically linked to the historical and social imperatives of the Assam Accord. Conceived as a non-affiliating, unitary, and residential central university, it was strategically situated at Napaam, approximately 15 kilometers from the cultural hub of Tezpur town on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River. This 262-acre campus serves not merely as a site for pedagogical instruction but as an engine for regional capacity building, intellectual preservation, and scientific innovation.3 The institutional mission emphasizes employment-oriented and interdisciplinary courses designed to meet local aspirations while simultaneously contributing to the national and global knowledge economy.

Academic Architecture and Departmental Organization

The structural organization of Tezpur University is predicated on five primary Schools of Studies, which act as the administrative and intellectual umbrellas for twenty-seven departments and numerous specialized centers. This decentralized yet integrated structure facilitates a high degree of departmental autonomy while fostering interdisciplinary research and teaching through a flexible Choice-Based Credit Transfer (CBCT) system.

School of Engineering

The School of Engineering is arguably the most industrially aligned wing of the university, focusing on technological intervention for regional and national development. The engineering disciplines are distinguished by their focus on both core competencies and emerging interdisciplinary fields such as bioelectronics and renewable energy.
