What makes Kerala Kalamandalam, deemed to be the University of Art and Culture, a unique Institute is its focus on Kerala. It is a major center for learning Indian performing arts, especially those that developed in the Southern states of India. It is situated in the small town of Cheruthuruthy in Thrissur, Thrissur District on the banks of the Bharathapuzha river.
Founded in 1930 by renowned poet Padmabhooshan Vallathol Narayana Menon along the banks of the river Nila in the Cheruthuruthy village of Thrissur District, Kalamandalam is an immortal name in the cultural map of the world. Kalamandalam is strictly a residential center of learning. Veteran teachers and talented students are its inestimable wealth.
Promoting Culture
The university attracts talents from all across India and neighboring countries. Kalamandalam offers special training in the performing arts taught here to aspirants from outside Kerala and abroad. Those who are interested can send the application and C.V. to Registrar, Kalamandalam. Preferably the applicants should have an instinct for music/dance, either classical or contemporary.
With a view to promoting the culture of Kerala, Kalamandalam offers only vegetarian food in its canteen. The canteen is mainly meant for regular students. There is a Govt. Guest House and a PWD Rest House at Cheruthuruthy, two Kms. away from the Kalamandalam main campus.
