Overview

Being the foundation for many successful engineers, scholars and leaders, College of Engineering, Guindy has its own fame among the best institutes. Located in the heart of Chennai central city, the institute has cutting edge infrastructure and premium facilities in providing the best for their students. The college was established in May 1794 by Michael Topping, with just one student in a small building near Fort St. George. Later it became a civil engineering college and subsequently got established under Madras University in 1859; then rechristened as College of Engineering in 1861 with mechanical engineering course included.

Academic Performance

The institute offers 18 UG, 35 PG (Regular) and 34 PG Self-supporting courses including a couple of Business Management courses, across 16 departments. They also got 6 university-affiliated centers and 12 research centers where innovative research programs are offered. Apart from that the Center for University and Industrial Collaboration provides a better infrastructure for conducting GDs, tests, and interviews with respect to their campus placements. The Office, in fact, interacts with many industries across the country, of which nearly 200 companies visit the campus for holding campus interviews.

The campus got sufficient facilities and experienced faculties in carrying out the entire curriculum throughout. The curriculum is also offered with a lot of extracurricular activities that enrich the students in getting into a better competitive world.


Research & Development

Around 13,000 research scholars are actually pursuing their Ph.D. and M.S./M.Tech., and areoffered a range of opportunities to explore their fields, under the top guidance of over 2500 researchers, and with access to best in class infrastructure. Students will get enough opportunities to work on various projects for the state as well as the central government. The research wing launched an indigenously built microsatellite, ANUSAT, the first of its kind to be built by an Indian university. Under the aegis of ISRO.

CEG is the nexus to many such potential research and development programs. CEG engages the research scholars in vast research activities that will extend beyond just classrooms. Various specialized Research Centres, with highly equipped faculty, are located around the campus that can provide better facilities to undertake research in any chosen sphere.

Notable Alumni

Father of the White Revolution’ in India, Padma Vibhushan Dr. VergheseKurien is one of the most notable personalities to have passed out of CEG. He received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1943. Ayyalasomayajula Lalitha known as the first female electrical engineer from India and P.K. Thressia, a civil engineer who went on to become India’s first female chief engineer are both alumni of CEG.
