School of Planning and Architecture

The School of Planning and Architecture started as the Department of Architecture of Delhi Polytechnic in the year 1941. Later it was affiliated to the University of Delhi and was established in 1955 by the government of India after integration with the School of Town and Country Planning. After integration it was renamed in 1959 as School of Planning and Architecture. The Ministry of Education and Culture granted the status of ‘deemed to be a University’ in 1979.

The human habitat and environment being the sole concern of the university around which they introduced 12 courses. Two courses for the under graduation which is bachelor’s in Architecture and Planning. Ten postgraduate courses being Masters in Planning with five different specializations being transported, urban, regional, housing and environmental planning; Masters in Urban Design, Masters of Architecture in Architectural Conservation, and Masters in Design (Industrial Design), Masters of Building Engineering and Management and Masters of Landscape Architecture. The institution also provides a doctoral programme and it also has two E-courses namely vulnerability atlas of India and architecture teacher training course on Hospitals.  With time some need academic programmes were introduced which are not available elsewhere in the country.

School of planning and architecture is currently working on a various project by collaborating with various national and international associations like Delhi and Oxford bookers University, local NGOs, Lancaster University (UK) etc. some live projects are Design Innovations Center, Role of Private Slum Developers in Low Income Settlement in Delhi and Dhaka, Study of In-Situ Rehabilitation of Slums in Delhi, ENVIS Center on Human Settlements, Indo-Norway Research Project on Transport Sector Strategies for Climate Change, Indo- Highway Capacity manual, Community-Led Heritage Regeneration in India: Agra Riverfront, Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan for National Archives of India Building,

The Director of the Institute and Placement in-charge invites various companies for recruitment. Last year the highest package was 14 LPA and the average package was 5 LPA. Companies like Ernst& Young, AECOM India, egis India, Infosys, Turner, WSP India, SYSTRA India, IPE Global Ltd, Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Bajaj, Philips, Whirlpool, Desmania, Havells, Fastrack, Godrej & Boyce, LG, Zomato, etc. visit the campus.

Arundhati Roy, best known for her novel “The God of Small Things” that won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction, also an activist involved in environmental causes and human rights, studied architecture from SPA, Delhi. Raj Rewal, the prime Indian architect, known for his designs of the Asiad village and Parliament Library amongst many, attended SPA Delhi from 1951 to 1954. Eugene Pandala, the architect known for environmental sustainability values in building studied Masters in Urban Design at Delhi. Architect Revathi Kamath, the trailblazer of mud architecture in the country, also credited with building the tallest stainless steel structure in India, earned her Bachelor’s in Architecture and completed her post-graduation in Urban and Regional Planning in 1977 and 1981 respectively, both from SPA Delhi. Baburam Bhattari, the Nepalese politician and former PM of Nepal went to SPA Delhi for his M. Tech. degree. Rajeev Verma, the film and TV actor holds a Masters in Urban Design from SPA Delhi.
