Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) is one of the most renowned educational institutions in post-independent India. Established on December 11, 1961, the institute was located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It was founded by the government of India, the government of Gujarat, industrialists, and Harvard Business School. IIMA enjoyed autonomy and flexibility as a public-private partnership. These distinctive features became an integral part of the organization’s culture and philosophy. The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad is also known as the ‘Well-known Institute of Management in Western India’ (WIMWI) among executives and managers.

The institute has grown from a pioneering national business school to an international organization with a branch campus in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. On September 11, 2025, the Crown Prince of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, opened the doors of the new campus. The new campus of IIMA will commence its operations from the Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) with a permanent campus to be set up in the Emirate by 2029. The global business school giant aims to bring its case method teaching and executive education programs to the neighboring Middle East countries and take advantage of the dynamic business environment in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Executive Program Architectures and Academic Designs

The design of IIMA’s executive education programs is shifting away from offering short-term certificates to providing degree programs. Such programs are tailored to meet the career needs, geography, and time of experienced managers. The four main types of IIMA’s Executive Programs are the Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (MBA-PGPX) – full-time in Ahmedabad, the Blended Post Graduate Programme in Management (BPGP), Blended Post Graduate Programme in Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (BPGP: BA & AI), and One-Year MBA in Dubai. The main characteristics of the four options including their duration and other key features are compared below in the table.

Domain Specializations and Areas of Excellence

Although the degrees awarded across these executive programs are in General Management to support enterprise-wide leadership, the curriculum is designed to allow for deep specialization. Rather than using rigid specialization tracking, IIMA utilizes a flexible elective system that lets participants customize their learning during the latter half of their programs.

Core Areas of Institutional Specialization Expertise

While other institutions focus on distinct functional areas—such as IIM Bangalore’s focus on analytics and tech, or IIM Calcutta’s focus on quantitative financial modeling—IIMA is recognized for its expertise in Management Consulting, Strategic Leadership, Corporate Venturing, and Agri-Business Management. The curriculum is structured to build the strategic frameworks and executive capabilities required for rapid vertical progression into C-suite and managing director roles.

The Elective Portfolio and Core Domains

The school offers its students a chance to specialize in six functional areas that determine the direction of one’s career:

  • Finance, Mergers, and Private Markets: This area offers the students an in-depth understanding of investment principles and financial matters. They include Alternative Investments, Applied Value Investing (AVI), Private Equity, Hedge Funds and Corporate Finance, and Valuation of Firms. Effective Management of Finance Strategy & Function (EMFSF) is an advanced-level course that is designed by Prof. Hari Mundra which helps general managers and CFOs in making important financial decisions about cash strategies and capital structures.
  • Operations, Supply Chain, and Systems: Apart from the basic principles of supply chains and logistics, the students learn to optimize the former using systems thinking. Apart from the required courses like the Logistics Management (LM) led by Debjit Roy, the elective Elephants and Cheetahs: Systems, Strategy and Bottlenecks’ (E&C) offered by Prof. Saral Mukherjee helps in developing the decision-making processes, especially at the time of addressing strategic issues. It uses the systems thinking framework and analogies from nature to understand and solve problems concerning marketing, human resources, operations, and supply chains.
  • Marketing Strategy and Consumer Insights: The area helps in understanding brand equity, marketing of industrial products and services, and digital platforms’ role in consumer goods and services. The marketing strategy is built around the Delivering and Managing Customer Value and B2B Marketing courses that focus on creating values for customers and business partners through globalization and relationships. Moreover, the students can take up Qualitative Inquiry and Methodology, an elective that helps in “right-brain” analytics. It is done by helping students leverage on their creativity to understand, analyze, and solve business problems using insights derived from qualitative data.
  • Business Analytics, Data Science, and AI: This area is necessary as big data and digital platforms continue to dominate the modern economy. It entails the following courses:
    • Deep Learning
    • Natural Language Processing
    • Big Data Analytics
    • Application of generative and agentic AI in business
  • Strategy, Leadership, and Public Policy: This area is ideal for those interested in learning how businesses, corporations, governments, and policymakers could create and leverage on strategic positions. It has courses such as Strategic Management of Corporations, Competitive Advantage, and Corporate Governance as well as Infrastructure Development & Public Private Partnerships.
  • Social and Strategic Entrepreneurship: The area is significant as it helps students add value to society while also learning how to develop businesses. It comprises Analyzing and Managing Start-ups and Social Entrepreneurship: Innovating Social Change (SEISC) led by Prof. Ankur Sarin and Prof. M.S. Sriram. It focuses on social entrepreneurship.

Pedagogical Frameworks and Structural Teaching Modes

The pedagogical architecture of IIMA's executive education is designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical business application. This model combines case-based discussions, immersive residency modules, and blended synchronous delivery to ensure continuous learning.

Pedagogical Architecture
├── The Case Method (Immersive analysis of real-world corporate dilemmas)
├── Immersive Residences (One-week campus modules for peer interaction and mentoring)
├── Synchronous D2D Delivery (Interactive online lectures for blended learning)
└── Capstone Simulations (C-suite business games for integrative decision-making)

The Hallmark Case Pedagogy

The case method of learning is a cornerstone of IIMA's pedagogy. In IIMA classes, instead of receiving lectures from professors, students engage in class-room discussions based on cases. In these cases, students get an opportunity to take on the role of a manager and make recommendations on financial, organizational, and operating issues based on real-world scenarios. Students analyze the case under the guidance of faculty to arrive at an action plan and defend their proposals under time constraints.

At IIMA, there is also a center that is devoted to developing and promoting the case method of teaching and learning amongst management educators in India. The Madan Mohanka Centre of Excellence in Case Method of Learning (MMCoECML) was inaugurated in August 2025. It promotes teaching research in the case method and offers training to management educators. In May 2026, the center conducted the first-ever 'Introduction to Case Pedagogy' program in collaboration with the institute. The session was conducted for 73 doctoral scholars from premier institutes such as IITs and IIMs on a free-of-cost basis to promote participant-based learning in higher education.

The Blended Learning Delivery Structure

For the working executive, the BPGP programs offer a blended learning mode to ensure the benefits of an interactive classroom without disturbing their work schedule. The program uses a combination of the two modes of learning below:

  • Direct to Device (D2D) sessions: This accounts for about 80% of the learning in the distance learning program. These are virtual classrooms scheduled on Thursday and Friday evenings (6:30 PM to 9:30 PM), Saturday evenings, and Sunday mornings.
  • On-campus modules: The other 20% of the curriculum is dedicated to on-campus learning. This requires participants to come to the Ahmedabad campus for one week at a time during each of the six terms. These modules comprise team interaction, leadership development, mentoring, and examinations. This also provides an opportunity for participants to foster a spirit of camaraderie and team building.

Program Eligibility Criteria and Admissions Filtration

Admissions to IIMA’s executive programs follow a selective, multi-stage process. The selection committee evaluates candidates holistically, assessing their academic foundations, professional achievements, and potential to contribute to class discussions.

The minimum eligibility parameters and testing requirements for each executive program are detailed in the table below.
