Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (BIT Mesra), established in the year 1955 at Mesra, Ranchi in the state of Jharkhand is a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act.  It is a leading institute of higher education having a wholly residential campus. In view of the brand and quality, it has many extension centres spread all over India including Jaipur, Noida, Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi, Deoghar, and University Polytechnic (Ranchi) as well as overseas centres in Ras al-Khaimah, UAE and Muscat, Oman.

The admission is made exclusively on Merit assessed by All India Rank (AIR) in JEE-Main-CSAB, GATE and AIPMT for its various courses.

The Governor of the state of Jharkhand is the Chancellor of the Institute. The Technical Council headed by vice-chancellor decides the academic policy of the Institute.

BIT offers many under-graduate, Post-graduates courses such as BE/B.Tech degrees and ME/M.Tech degrees in the various engineering departments. MSc degrees are offered in applied sciences and Pharm/Pharm in pharmaceutical sciences. The university also has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme and a Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BHMCT). It also offers Diploma in Technology in the various engineering department at University Polytechnic.

In the prestigious and widely acclaimed educational ranking of Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF- 2021), BIT-Mesra at 10^th Rank in IIRF Deemed University Ranking 2021.
