Adamas University

PO - Jagannathpur, Dist - 24 Parganas (North), Kolkata, W.B, India – 700126

The evolution of higher education in the Indian subcontinent has witnessed a paradigm shift from traditional pedagogical frameworks to multidisciplinary, research-intensive ecosystems designed to address the complexities of a globalized economy. At the forefront of this transformation in Eastern India is Adamas University, an institution that has rapidly ascended the ranks of private academia since its formal inception in 2014.

Established under the West Bengal Act IV of 2014, the university represents the academic culmination of the RICE Group’s decades-long commitment to professional development and nation-building. Situated on a sprawling 120-acre "Knowledge City" in Barasat, Kolkata, the university integrates early-stage schooling with advanced doctoral research, creating a continuous pipeline of intellectual growth and vocational readiness. This article provides an exhaustive analysis of Adamas University’s strategic priorities, academic programs, research contributions, and its standing within the national and international educational landscape.

Historical Genesis and the RICE Group Legacy

The foundational narrative of Adamas University is inextricably linked to the socio-economic vision of Professor Dr. Samit Ray, who recognized a critical deficit in the employability and competitive success of West Bengal’s youth during the mid-1980s. The genesis of the Roy’s Institute of Competitive Examinations (RICE) in 1985 was a targeted intervention to equip urban and rural candidates with the skills necessary to qualify for elite government and public sector positions. Over the ensuing decades, RICE became a cornerstone of professional training in Eastern India, successfully mentoring over 100,000 professionals into state and central government services.

This legacy of competitive excellence provided the structural and ideological scaffolding for Adamas Knowledge City. Professor Ray’s vision was to provide a "utopia" where all educational needs—from primary schooling to specialized PhD research—could be satisfied under a single institutional roof. The establishment of Adamas International School in 2004, affiliated with the CISCE and the University of Cambridge, UK, served as the initial phase of this Knowledge City. By 2014, the transition to a full-fledged university was complete, enabled by the Sachis Kiran Roy Memorial Trust (SKRMT) and legislative approval from the West Bengal Government. Today, Adamas University maintains this unique heritage by being the only university that offers specialized training for IAS, IPS, and WBCS examinations alongside its standard degree curriculum, effectively merging academic rigor with vocational ambition.

Strategic Priorities and the Research Ecosystem

Adamas University has articulated a clear set of strategic priorities that guide its institutional trajectory. These include research and consultancy, academic excellence, student experience, social footprints, internationalization, entrepreneurship and innovation, industry collaboration, and excellence in sports. The university envisions becoming a highly respected global institute by creating new knowledge through innovation for the benefit of industry and society as a whole.

The institutional shift toward becoming a research-driven university is supported by the Central Research and Development (R&D) Office and the Internal Quality Enhancement and Excellence in Research (IQEER) committee. This committee, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, oversees the sanctioning of internal seed grants and ensures that research outputs meet global quality standards. The primary objectives of the university's research policy include publishing in high-impact journals, securing patents with commercial potential, and attracting extramural funding to establish state-of-the-art laboratories.

Research Funding and Extramural Grants

The financial robustness of the research ecosystem is reflected in the university’s success in securing funding from diverse sources. Over a five-year period, faculty members have successfully acquired financing from government, industrial, and non-government sponsors totaling approximately ₹31.46 crores. Internally, the university has allocated ₹1.70 crores for intramural research and has sanctioned ₹31.9 lakhs in SEED grants to support early-career faculty members in initiating their research programs.
