Prof. Ram Shiv Puri

Positions: Founder Director, Centre for Detector and Software Technology, University of Delhi

Prof. R.K. Shivpuri is Founder Director, Centre for Detector and Software Technology, University of Delhi and has been Chairperson, M.Tech. Committee on Nuclear Science and Technology, University of Delhi.  He has also been a Senior Advisor and Distinguished Professor at University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun.  Recognizing the dire need of shortage of manpower in the country in the Nuclear Technology area, he launched an aggressive program to start such a course in the Country.  In the last ten years, he has been a moving force in starting the Nuclear Technology Courseat the M Tech level in several Universities such as University of Delhi,Mody University, Rajasthan and University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun. He also arranged a Collaboration with France for students to do course work and internship for one year in French Nuclear laboratories. As a result of this program, more than 200 students have graduated as Nuclear Engineers who have mostly been selected in different labs of the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt.of India.

He has been Principal Investigator of several International Research Projects including Fermilab D-zero Collider Experiment, USA and Search for New Particles at the Large Hadron Collider, CERN, Geneva, Switzerland with total grants over Rs. 15 Crores. He has been associated with the two greatest discoveries of Particle Physics in last fifty years – Top Quark in 1995 and Higgs Boson (God Particle) in 2012. His research area is experimental High Energy Physics and Si detector Technology in Nuclear Interactions. His research work has been cited over 80,000 times in International journals.

He started the collaboration of University of Petroleum and Energy studies, Dehradun with several French Universities and of Mody University (Exclusively women’s University) with several Universities in France, Germany, Switzerland, USA etc. Consequently, several students from Mody University are regularly going to France, USA,Germany and Switzerland for internship.  Students from those countries have also started coming over to Mody University for internship.

During 1968-70, he worked as a post-doctoral fellow at State University of New York, Buffalo, USA.In 1971, he joined as Associate Professor of Physics at Clarkson University, New York, USA. He joined Department of Physics, University of Delhi as a faculty member in 1974. He founded the Centre for Detector and Software Technology, University of Delhi which has evolved among the top institution for research in High Energy Physics in the Country.

He has been a Visiting Scientist at Fermilab, Chicago, USA, where he worked in three major experiments for over 25 years. He has received research grants- afew million dollars from National Science Foundation, Washington, USA. He is the first Indian Scientist from any Indian University to start the Collaboration between Fermilab, USAand Indian Universities in the year 1985.This tie up allowed the Indian faculty and students to use the research facilities at the world’s highest energy Accelerator at that time- at Fermilab. During this time, he got a generous grant from National Science Foundation, Washington, USA.  He used the grant to train the Indian students and as a consequence, twenty students working under him got their Ph D’s due to work at Fermilab, USA. He has been a Visiting Scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA, Rochester University, University of Wisconsin, to name a few. Currently, he is a Visiting Scientist at European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva, Switzerland and he has been in this position for over two decades.
