Overview

National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) located in Pune was established in 1950. It is the concerned laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). CSIR-NCL is one of the sciences and knowledge-based organization that carries out research, development as well as consulting. This institute is internationally famous for its excellence in scientific research in chemistry and also in chemical engineering as well as for its outstanding track record of industrial research that involves various partnerships with industry from the concept phase to commercialization.

NCL has had a legacy of distinguished leaders who have guided its destiny at various milestones of the journey. With its remarkable tradition of excellence in scientific research, it has nourished the best minds of India.

Academic Performance

NCL provides a wonderful academic atmosphere that facilitates multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research. A number of opportunities are available to conduct various research in Physical Chemistry, Molecular biology, Structural biology, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Proteomics, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Materials Chemistry and Physics, Materials for Solar Energy, Nanomaterials, Biochemistry, Plant Tissue Culture, Polymer Science & Engineering, Green Chemistry, Advanced Functional Materials, Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysis, etc.

NCL has excellent facilities and equipment for carrying out research in the above areas. NCL also subscribes to many of the important scientific journals as well. Students will have sufficient opportunities to attend a number of conferences and present their works. NCL got a lot of many reputed scientists including Nobel Laureates as guests.

Research & Development

CSIR-NCL and their scientists got many collaborative projects with leading academic and scientific institutes and also, with other prominent individual researchers. Scientists individually or as a group have many collaborative programs with various premium research groups from the country as well from other nations. CSIR-NCL publishes an approximate of 400 research articles with a number of international peer-reviewed journals every year. Along with that, they file about 100 patents in India as well as abroad.

Research and Development activities of the Polymer Science & Engineering Division include basic research in the synthesis of polymers. Apart from that Nanobiotechnology group is involved in microbial and plant-based biosynthesis of nanomaterials and even their application in human healthcare. With their in-depth understanding of organic chemical mechanisms underneath biological processes, the group interfaces chemistry along with biology and material science to characterize enzymes in the biosynthetic pathway. This is a few among the different wide range of research areas.

Notable Alumni

Dr. A. V. Rama Rao who was conferred Padma Shri in 1991, while working at the National Chemical Laboratory has rose to the position of head of the organic chemistry division. Dr. K. Anji Reddy who had got his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from National Chemical Laboratory had gone on to become an entrepreneur and had founded the world-famous Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories in Hyderabad in 1984.
