AFMC is one of the top-rated medical institutes in the country. It is also acknowledged as the Centre of excellence for education as well as research. The institute provides better training to undergraduate as well as postgraduate medical students and nursing students as well, with assured career prospects in the defense sector.

The institute was established on 01 May 1948 with due recommendations by the BC Roy Committee by the converging of various defense medical organizations. The Graduate Wing of the institute was established on 4th August 1962 in order to provide sustainable and steady recruitment of medical officers for the Indian Armed Forces. The institute is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and it is recognized by the Medical Council of India for conducting undergraduate as well as various post-graduate medical courses across.

Academic Performance

The institute was ranked 3rdamong the medical colleges in the country in 2019, by India Today and was ranked 2ndamong top medical colleges in India in 2019 by Outlook India and secured4thin the country by The Week. AFMC offers various courses at the graduate as well as at the postgraduate level. The courses are like MBBS, Nursing, PG Diploma, Post-graduation Courses, Super Specialty courses, Paramedical Courses, etc. The faculty of the College is involved in the classroom as well as clinical teaching in their area of specialization across the courses. This institution has taken a step forward, which is towards the empowerment of PBOR by starting the Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technician which is a Post BSc course under affiliation of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.

Students are encouraged to participate in various sports and many have excelled in their arena. There are a large number of societies and clubs such as the Hobbies Club, Adventure Club, Dance Debating Club, Student Scientific Society, Computer Club, Club and Musimatics where students can pursue their extra-curricular interests and talents.

Research & Development

Various departments engage in research projects either under departmental sponsorship or under the guidance auspices of the Armed Forces Medical Research Committee. Apart from service-oriented projects, research in clinical and laboratory subjects is also carried out at the institute. AFMC also has the facility for various hatcheries for disease-producing insects for studying them, and bacteriology and a virology bank and animal house, for specific purposes. AFMC is also research as well as a referral center for diagnosis of disease, identification of pathogens, and classification of blood disorders as well.

Notable Alumni

Padma Shri Ashok Rajgopal, the orthopedic surgeon from India who is credited with 20,000 odd Arthroscopic and more than 35,000 Total Knee Arthroplasty surgeries graduated in medicine from AFMC in 1974. Padma Shri Arvind Lal, the billionaire pathologist and medical administrator who is the Chairman of Dr. Lal PathLabs happens to be a proud alumnus of the College. Sudhir Patwardhan, a contemporary painter from India graduated in medicine from Armed Forces Medical College in the year 1972.
