Overview

NID Ahmedabad was founded as a collaborative venture of the Indian Government, the Ford Foundation, and the Sarabhai family. It was initially named the National Institute of Industrial Design and was set up as a fully autonomous institution in 1961 at Ahmedabad. Ever since its advent, the institute has consistently grown by leaps and bounds and is today hailed as one of the finest institutions for Industrial Communication, Textile and Integrated (Experiential) Design at a global scale. Functioning under the Ministry of Commerce of the Government of India, it achieved the status of the “Institute of National Importance” in 2014.

The institute’s credibility is further reinforced by its recognition by the Department of Scientific Industrial Research of the Government of India as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. As an institute, NID aims to impart quality education to its students at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees through an integrated curriculum. This can be effectively achieved with a flexible blend of student-centered learning manifested through courses and assignments which impart multidimensional learning and foster the spirit of creative expression amongst students.
