A group of esteemed individuals in 1961 set the foundational stone for one of the most prominent B-schools in modern India – the IIM Ahmedabad. These included the likes of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, an eminent space scientist; Shri Kasturbhai Lallbhai, the notable industrialist and philanthropist, with the able support of erstwhile CM of Gujarat, Dr. Jivraj Mehta. The cornerstones of the institute were established by the collaborative efforts of five different stakeholders- the central and the state government of India, the local industrialists, the Ford Foundation, and the Harvard Business School. Hailed as the premier management school in the country by numerous agencies, IIMA’s pedagogy has found global recognition as well. It was awarded EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System), accreditation by the EMFD (European Foundation for Management Development), the first of its kind in the country.

IIMA’s functioning was initially decided to be undertaken by a Society, called the IIMA Society, founded under the Societies Act. The institute was further to be run by a Board of Governors, appointed by the said Society. This cohort would be representative of all the relevant constituencies thus endorsing and effectively addressing the multitude of needs of the nation. Under this mechanism, the institute was going to be free from the hegemony of any particular constituency. This underpinned the operational freedom as one of the fundamental constituents of IIM A’s DNA.

In order to fulfill its vision, IIM Ahmedabad has consistently harped on a high-performance work environment amongst its various cogs in the wheel i.e., the faculty members, staff, and students all thriving in a culture of autonomy, creativity, and collaboration. Through this model and one of the most rigorous pedagogies in the world, IIMA hopes to address the myriad societal concerns of the Indian populace.

This Institute offers Post-graduation, Diploma, Certificate, Executive, and fellowship Programs in Management. Rated as the top 5 courses by Financial Times in the world, Executive MBA (PGP-Ex), IIM Ahmedabad is one of the most popular choices.

As an institute, IIM Ahmedabad is extremely conducive to ground-breaking research in the domain of management. With its exceptional faculty, the institute is best positioned to solve pressing problems of the contemporary industries thus contributing to effective research on making society more sustainable in an emerging economy like India. With a rigorous focus on both qualitative and quantitative research in management, IIM A has been at the fore of many research projects aided by its international collaboration with other researchers globally in publishing works. These painstaking research projects wouldn’t have borne fruition if it wasn’t for the support of The Research and Publications (R&P) office at IIMA which covers the entire gambit of disseminating and contributing to collaborative research work through seminars, workshops, and webinars in all disciplines of management.
