Overview

A group of esteemed individuals in 1961 set the foundational stone for one of the most prominent B-schools in modern India – the IIM Ahmedabad. These included the likes of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, an eminent space scientist; Shri Kasturbhai Lallbhai, the notable industrialist and philanthropist, with the able support of erstwhile CM of Gujarat, Dr. Jivraj Mehta. The cornerstones of the institute were established by the collaborative efforts of five different stakeholders- the central and the state government of India, the local industrialists, the Ford Foundation, and the Harvard Business School. Hailed as the premier management school in the country by numerous agencies, IIMA’s pedagogy has found global recognition as well. It was awarded EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System), accreditation by the EMFD (European Foundation for Management Development), the first of its kind in the country.

IIMA’s functioning was initially decided to be undertaken by a Society, called the IIMA Society, founded under the Societies Act. The institute was further to be run by a Board of Governors, appointed by the said Society. This cohort would be representative of all the relevant constituencies thus endorsing and effectively addressing the multitude of needs of the nation. Under this mechanism, the institute was going to be free from the hegemony of any particular constituency. This underpinned the operational freedom as one of the fundamental constituents of IIM A’s DNA.

In order to fulfill its vision, IIM Ahmedabad has consistently harped on a high-performance work environment amongst its various cogs in the wheel i.e., the faculty members, staff, and students all thriving in a culture of autonomy, creativity, and collaboration. Through this model and one of the most rigorous pedagogies in the world, IIMA hopes to address the myriad societal concerns of the Indian populace.
