Overview

Physical Research Laboratory offers educational opportunities to people who are interested in physics, astronomy, geoscience, etc. The Laboratory was founded in 1947 by Vikram Ambalal Saranac, a cosmic-ray and space scientist. He is also honored with Padma Bhushan in 1966. Initially, the Laboratory was supported by the Karmkshetra Educational Foundation and the Ahmedabad Education Society.

Research in Radio Physics was their early topic. The Laboratory achieved several scientific milestones over the years which are Cosmic Rays and Atmospheric Sciences in the 1950s, Theoretical Physics and Radio Physics in the 1960s, Earth and Planetary sciences and Infra-Red Astronomy in the 1970s, Particle Physics and Solar Physics in the 1980s, Laser Physics and Quantum Optics, Non-linear Dynamics and Computational Physics, Astroparticle Physics and Cosmology in the 1990s, and Quantum Information, Solar X-ray Astronomy, Submillimetre Astronomy and Planetary Exploration in the 2000s.

Academic Performance 

The Laboratory offers short-term courses in two disciplines, which are the UN School of Space Science and RESPOND programs. These courses are also offered online. The UN School of Space Science offers a course on Space and Atmospheric Science. The applicant should have a master’s degree in physics or astrophysics or astronomy or solar physics or meteorology. Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in engineering would also be eligible for the course. The RESPOND program offers courses in Space Sciences, which is sponsored by ISRO. This course has been designed for a scientist in universities or any other academic institution.

Research and Development 

The Laboratory runs continuous research on Astronomy, Astrophysics, Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Geoscience, Planetary Sciences, Space and Atmospheric Sciences, Theoretical Physics, etc. Applicants can join these research programs to achieve a doctoral degree. Among these departments of research, there are several topics that are being researched further. As an example, the Theoretical Physics research offers several areas of research that are in Atomic Physics covering Bose-Einstein condensation and degenerate quantum games. Condensed matter physics including (un) conventional superconductivity.

Since the Laboratory itself runs several research projects, a student can easily be a part of those researches. Apart from that, a doctoral degree holder could be placed in any other Laboratory or physical research organization. After completing a Ph.D. from Physical Research Laboratory, one can find job offers from the Laboratory itself. There are jobs for faculties, researchers, research fellowships, and other internship programs.
