Central Glass And Ceramic Research Institute, CGCRI

Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI) is an autonomous research institute. Its main focus is on the area of glass, ceramics, mica, refractories, etc. It is situated in Kolkata in the state of West Bengal. This institute functions under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The main motto of this institute is to achieve perfection by doing duties perfectly. On 26th August 1950, it was established. Initially, identifying suitable mineral resources within the country, their suitability for specific product development, quality control was their main work.

The mission of this institute is to offer the best research and development resources to the students in the field of glass and related materials. This will help maximize the environment, capital, and societal benefit to the country. Also, the vision of this institute is to endure innovation and creativity in the field of science and technology to create usable materials and attain a unique status in this specific industry. They help the students to achieve excellence, expertise, and experience in developing the best solutions for the people.

This institute developed various types of optical glasses through which it came into the limelight in the international arena. Other than developing optical glasses CGCRI also worked on various things in the same decade such as introducing the modern techniques in glass and ceramics, evaluating different materials and its suitability in specific uses, basic studies on the generation of color in glasses, developing high-temperature combustion boats.

In the ’70s, the CGCRI improvised and carried out many more researches like the development of laser glass, synthetic quartz single crystal, infra-red transmitting filters, high alumina ceramic seals and spacers, high-temperature protective enamels, etc. Some research work was also started on foam glass, steel plant refractories, glass bonded mica, etc.

In the ’80s, CGCRI started working on a number of fields not just in India but also in the international arena. Various projects on the field of optical fibre for telecommunications, production of glass fibre-based composites, sol-gel processing of glass and ceramic materials, and application of ceramic materials in electronics were initiated.

In the ’90s, CGCRI started some Research & Development work and put more emphasis on three major sectors which are National security or strategy, Industrial development, and societal activities that covered some real problems of national importance like Water, Energy, Communication, Health care, and instrumentation.

Now, CGCRI is working on various other plans and projects both nationally and internationally which lead to the development of the country.

The placements of this institution are vast. Around 90-95% of students get placement after they complete their graduation and it is very commendable. The students get tempting offers from various recognised institutions or organisations to work in this field. The students are offered an internship from the institution and other different institutions in this field. During their course, the students get internships in this field with an average stipend of INR 20,000. Not just this, during their internship, the students are provided with great facilities in the institution as well.
