Overview

All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health (AIIH&PH) is an Indian institution situated in Kolkata in the state of West Bengal. On 30th December 1932, it was established with the assistance of the Rockefeller Foundation. The main focus of this institution is to carry out research and training in matters of public health and allied industry. This institute functions for the Government of India under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The institute was accredited by WHO and UNICEF in 1953 as an international training centre. It is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (established in the year 2003). AIIH&PH has two training centres: A rural training centre in Singur and an Urban training centre in Chetla. Their mission is to create a competent resource for public healthcare services through training, research, and proper teaching regularly. The vision of the institute is to ensure that the students are getting proper training and skills to become successful in their lives. The institute hires the best faculty and teachers who can train the students using their technical strengths and expertise. Academic Performance

All India Institute of Hygiene and public health (AIIH&PH) is a pioneer institute that has a prime status attached to it when it comes to academic achievements and contributions done by its founders. The main focus of this institute is the welfare of public health and it is clearly indicated by the list of courses offered by the institute. The institute also runs various training programmes of different categories on a regular basis. It takes various Public Health-related challenges and finds solutions for it. The institute has taken several notable initiatives as well.

In 1944, the first general health survey was conducted. In this survey, nearly 1200 families of 7000 members in 68 villages of West Bengal were involved in order to get a better picture of health conditions and factors influencing community health. In the late ’40s, low-cost pour-flush toilets with on-site disposal were developed by AIIH&PH. It also developed a model for maintaining hand-pumps for community water supply. In 1957, the Government of India came on board with the idea of health education for family planning methods and the distribution of contraceptive measures temporarily all over India. When the Rural Training Centre in Singur conducted a survey on this issue and confirmed the need for it. The list of such achievements may go on as this institute has achieved a lot in this field of public health.
