Overview

Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) was founded by Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis in 1931 in Kolkata, dedicated towards teaching practices, research-application of social sciences, natural sciences, and statistics, with a focus on research in statistics. Teaching practices of the institute are conducted in Kolkata-Bangalore-Delhi. ISI thrived in theoretical research in the field of statistics working on consultancy projects concerning ‘Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research’. The eminence of Mahalanobis encouraged students of physics to take interest in statistics also. ISI included different scholars who formulated an operative group of statisticians. ISI was acclaimed – ‘institute of national importance’ by the Indian Parliament in 1959 for contribution in – sample survey, experiment designing, computer science, and multivariate statistics.

Academics

ISI offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma courses, and research programs. It provides two UG courses – Bachelor of Statistics (Honors) and Mathematics (Honors). The PG courses on offer are in Statistics, Mathematics, Science in- Quantitative Economics, Library, and Information and Quality Management Science, Technology in Computer Science, Cryptology and Security, and Quality, Reliability & Operations Research. The research programs on offer are in various fields like Statistics, Mathematics, Quantitative Economics, Computer Science, Quality, Reliability & Operations Research, and Junior Research Fellowships. Ph.D. students working in an area other than these must register for a Ph.D. in- physics, geology, biological sciences. The Diploma courses at the ISI are Postgraduate Diploma in Statistical Methods and Business Analytics, Computer Applications, and Part-time Course in SQC and OR.

The knowledgeable professionals of ISI have successfully secured the highest package of 31.4 LPA and an average of 19.2 LPA from a batch size of 155. Roles offered to professionals are data/decision scientist, analyst/business, economist/risk, and model/software development engineer.
