Overview

The National Sugar Institute, also known as NSI, has a long history when it comes to its name. The history of the National Sugar Institute goes way back to 1920. During the British Indian Government, the climatic conditions and the area of cultivation fuelled the promotion of the Sugar Industry in India. As a result, the Indian Sugar Committee was formed. The sugar section of Harcourt Butler Technical Institute was then taken over by the Government of India and was established under the “Imperial Institute of Sugar Technology” in 1936. After that in 1944, the administrative control of the “Imperial Institute of Sugar Technology” was transferred to the “Indian Central Sugarcane Committee”. After India attained its freedom in 1947, the name was changed to “Indian Institute of Sugar Technology or I.I.S.T.” Finally in 1957, the name of the institute was changed to “National Sugar Institute” when the Government of India got the administrative control under the Ministry of Food & Agriculture.
