Overview

AIIMS or All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences is a public university for medical research which has one of their campuses in Bhubaneswar, the capital city of the state of Odisha. Operating autonomously under the aegis of family welfare and the Ministry of Health, AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s foundation stone was laid by the former Prime minister of India (Bharat Ratna) Shri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the month of July 2003 but the university was finally established in the year 2012. The AIIMS Campus extends over 100 acres and has in it the hospital complex and also an area allotted for residential purposes. A 900-bed multi-specialty hospital with 43 departments is what the hospital complex consists of. The Academic Area which is present in the complex gives space for the Academic Block and the College of Nursing as well as the Central Library. The Academic Blocks are made up of 4 Lecture Halls and there are Departmental Labs for Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, and Community Medicine respectively. The total number of departments is 41 and all the 41 departments have their own departmental cabins, labs, library room as well as conference rooms. In the Academic Building, a stationery and snacks outlet is also built. The Academic Building also contains the Director’s office along with the office of the Dean and Admin department. It also houses other staff departments like Electric, Finance, Engineering, and central library. In the residential complex, there are 3boy’s hostels and 2 girl’s hostels for undergraduate students of MBBS, Nursing, and Allied Sciences. All hostels have a capacity of 800-rooms. For Postgraduates, four hostels are being provided and along with that four staff and faculty, blocks are also built. Near the main residential gate, the Director’s bungalow and guest house are located.

Academic Performance

The institute wants to create a center that can achieve excellence in medical education, health care, training, and research infused with scientific temperament, compassion for people suffering from sickness, and an unwavering commitment to serve society. The aim is to develop patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education at all its campuses so that they can demonstrate a high standard of medical education to all the various medical colleges and all other types of institutes present in the country. The institute also stands to bring under one roof all the educational facilities for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity and to accomplish self-sufficiency in postgraduate medical education.

Courses Offered

  • MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) –The course of studies last a minimum of five and a half academic years which includes a mandatory internship for one year, successful completion of which leads to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S).
  • B.Sc. Hons. (Bachelor of Science) (Nursing) – The duration of studies takes a minimum of four academic years, successful completion of which leads to the award of the degree of BSc (Hons) Nursing Course.

Placement Highlights

Sadly, placement opportunities are not offered in medical colleges. But, each student has to complete a compulsory internship programme through which they gain experience and which is also added to their resume.
