Overview

The establishment of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National University or RMLNLU, Lucknow was in the year 2005 by an Act of Govt. of Uttar Pradesh and started functioning on 4th of January 2006. After an amendment in the Act, the ‘institution’ in ‘Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law Institution, Uttar Pradesh’ later got replaced by ‘university’ in the November of 2006. The university is committed to providing top-notch infrastructural facilities and environment to disseminate learning and knowledge of the law and legal process and to develop a sense of responsibility in the students and research scholars which will teach them to serve the society in the field of law by developing skills in advocacy, judicial, and other legal services and legislation.

Academic Performance

With the aim to provide knowledge to their students which in return will train the students to work for the betterment of the society, at present the University offers B.A. LL.B. (Hons.)-a five-year integrated programme, LL.M. which is a one-year programme, Ph.D., and other short-term training programmes. The number of seats in each course is fixed from time to time by the Academic Council on the recommendation of the Director. The admission is based on Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) performance and the total intake of the institution is 160, plus 16 NRI seats.

Research & Development

Like all of the other national law institutions, RMLNLU also works as a pace-setter and a testing ground for bold experiments in legal education. After the establishment of the first national law school in Bangalore in 1987, the need for professional education in the legal field was generated. As a result, the Bar Council of India made professional education a statutory responsibility under the Advocates Act. Overall, the institution worked for a better education for the students of law with its excellent infrastructure and other resources. The university holds numerous publications by the students and faculty members.

Placement Highlights 

The recruitment process of the university is handled by the internship and placement committee. The students of the university intern with various law firms, PPOs, NGOs, government organizations, corporate houses, PSUs, and under reputed judges and advocates. Some of the recruiters are Alliance law group, Khaitan and Co., Ashok Mehta and Associates, Eastern Book Publications Ltd., Hindustan Unilever Ltd., Pepsi Co. India Holdings Pvt. Ltd., Coal India Limited, etc. Not all the students register for campus placements, some bag pre-placement offers, and some get going with their own ventures.

Notable Alumni

Anas Tanwir Siddiqui an advocate of the supreme court is an RMLNLU graduate of the 2012 batch. Shewtank Tripathi, a graduate of the 2012 batch was associated with the Zeus law firm in his initial years and is currently working in a higher post in the firm. Prateek Shanker Srivastava, the senior legal executive of Hindustan Unilever Ltd., is an alumnus of the University. Sneha Thakur, one of the first graduates of RMLNLU was awarded the “Centre of Commercial Law Scholarship” from CCLS at Queen Mary University, London, and thus, she pursued an LL.M. in “Corporate Governance and International Comparative Commercial Arbitration” from there. Aarushi Mishra, an associate at Wadia Ghandy is a law graduate from the University.
