Centre For Cellular & Molecular Biology, CCMB

The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) is a chief research Institute in unexplored regions of contemporary biology. The purpose of the Centre is to lead top-notch essential research and preparing in unexplored regions of contemporary biology and advance unified public offices for new and current procedures in the inter-disciplinary territories of science.

Set up at first as a semi-independent venture on April 1, 1977, it was administered by Dr. P. M. Bhargava. Prior, the Governing Board of CSIR New Delhi, the central body which comprised 44 research organizations in the nation, in 1976 proposed to build such an organization taking into account the significance of research in multiple disciplines of present-day science. CCMB concurred the status of a completely developed public research facility with its own Governing Committee and Scientific Advisory Council during 1981-82.

There are three categories under which the training programs at CCMB are conducted, namely – Skill Development Program in Biological Sciences, Project-based Research Training Programme, and Dissertation Research Training Program.

Overall, around 15,000 people visit CCMB each year to comprehend what researchers do, and how their efforts affect humankind and the nation. Open Day, celebrated yearly on September 26th marks the significant piece of this footfall and on this day the organization paves the way for the general public to visit and communicate with its researchers, see the offices, and explore the research that the establishment does. The vast majority of the guests are school and undergrads and teachers.

In the last 7 years, YIP at CCMB gives a stage to school goers to invest an all-inclusive measure of energy with researchers here. Out of approximately 200 intrigued understudies from different schools in Hyderabad, based on a screening test, the top 10% is chosen for the 2-week plan or program. In this program, the students get associated with youthful and senior researchers, have profound conversations to comprehend the inspirations that drive researchers, and exercises to value the logical philosophy. Research at CCMB is organized under the following extensive topics: Developmental Biology, Structural Biology, Genomics and Epigenetic Regulation, Cell and Stem Cell Biology, Microbes and Biology of Infection, Wildlife Conservation and Ecology, Crop Improvement, Innovation and Technology Development. Most recently, CCMB, Hyderabad was associated with DNA halo typing of wild buffaloes, leading to the reintroduction of the species in Central India. CCMB is also responsible for culturing the coronavirus for a potential vaccine.

Padma Shri Lalji Singh, popularly known as the “Father of Indian DNA fingerprinting”, also known for Wildlife Conservation, Molecular Sex Determination, and Evolution and migration of humans, joined the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad in June 1987 as a senior scientist. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology awardee Ch. Mohan Rao, a molecular biologist, was a fellow at CCMB Hyderabad. Rakesh Mishra, genomics and epigenetics scientist, known in the fields of Genome Organization and Chromatin Structure, went on to join CCMB Hyderabad. ShaheenSulthana, a project scientist at Dr. Frederic Chedin Lab, University of California, Sadeem Ahmad, a post-doctoral fellow at Dr. Sun Hur Lab, Harvard Medical School, and KomalPawar, a postdoctoral fellow at Skiniotis Lab, Stanford University are graduate-alumni of CCMB.
