Overview

Osmania University, named after its founder Nawab Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad is a collegiate public state university in Hyderabad, Telangana. In 1918, he brought the University into existence through a ‘fireman’ or Royal Charter. The University is the third oldest university in South India and the seventh oldest university in the Country.

The vision of the University is to meet the challenges of regional, national, and global socio-economic changes by improving, enhancing, and developing the quality of human resources.


Mission

The mission of the University is to achieve excellence in teaching and research to create opportunities for students to contribute to regional and national development.

Osmania University is re-certified by NAAC – National Assessment and Accreditation Council, the Autonomous Institution of UGC – University Grants Commission as an ‘A+’ Grade University. It has more than 3,00,000 students on its own campuses and the affiliated colleges, with around 5,000 staff and faculty. The University campus is spread over 1600 acres approximately. It makes it one of the largest universities in the world.

Academics

Osmania University, a confederation of affiliated colleges, constituent colleges, and university colleges is a non-profit university-managed and funded by the government. It offers courses in Sciences, Arts, Humanities, Law, Social Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Technology, Commerce and Business Management, Oriental Languages, and Information Technology. Admissions into the Doctoral programmes, Masters programmes and Bachelor of Engineering programmes on its main campus is on merit, evaluated by the national entrance exams like GATE, JEE Main, EAMCET, etc.

The research activities at Osmania University are funded by different autonomous agencies of the GoI. It has got the funding under the RUSA 2.0 programme of the MHRD, GoI under Component 4 – quality and excellence in select State Universities, and Component 13 – faculty improvement.


Notable Alumni

P. V. Narasimha Rao, the ninth Prime Minister of India studied Bachelors of Arts at Osmania University. Padma Shri Shantanu Narayen obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University College of Engineering at Osmania. Padma Vibhushan Y. V. Reddy, a retired IAS officer, and an economist, who became the 21st Governor of Reserve Bank of India got his Ph.D. from Osmania University. Harsha Bhogle, the cricket commentator-cum-journalist, received his B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering from the University’s College of Technology. Padma Bhushan Shyam Benegal, the Indian film screenwriter and director, received his M.A. in Economics from Osmania University, Hyderabad. Gagan Narang, the famous Indian shooter, received his Bachelor of Computer Application degree from Osmania University Hyderabad. Padma Bhushan Sania Mirza, six Grand Slams winner, graduated from St. Mary’s College under Osmania University. Shivraj Vishwanath Patil, former Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh, attended Osmania University in Hyderabad to earn his degree in Science. Konidela Ram CharanTeja, the award-winning Telugu-language film actor, got educated at Osmania University’s St. Mary’s College. Naina Jaiswal, the international table tennis player, also a child prodigy, the youngest post-graduate from Asia, who began her Ph.D. at the age of 17, finished her graduation from St. Mary’s under Osmania University at the age of 13. Raghu Ram, the television producer, known for MTV Roadies, completed his graduation from Osmania University.
