Overview

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras aka IIT Madras, one of the premium institutes in the country, is known for its academic excellence in technical education, basic as well as applied research, both nationally and internationally. Innovation, entrepreneurship and industry consultancy were some of the key competency of the institution.

The establishment of the institution was signed in 1959, with regards to the first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany. Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs formally inaugurated the Institute in 1959.

IIT madras covers a wide range of curriculum such as online BSc programs, undergraduate programs, postgraduate programs, research programs, joint degree programs and even student exchange program across the globe for all the courses.

The academic departments spread across 16 departments and several advanced research centers in various disciplines. The core curriculum always succeeded in providing their students with providing common and challenging academic foundation before they begin any specific field of study. The entire course curriculum is balanced with a number of other activities which include co-curricular activities, special lectures, conferences, symposia, workshops etc.

Research & Development

The institute is one of the best in carrying out the research component across their academic and post-academic period. Faculties of the institute carry various research in their areas of interest, mostly in collaborating with research scholars, doctoral scholars, or with other researchers, as well as they also have several ongoing collaborations with several universities, industries and even governments.

Their areas of research vary from metal forming, integrated computational materials engineering, functional and biomedical materials, iron & steel technology, Nano & bulk materials processing, ceramics, surface engineering and much more.

They got talented, experienced faculties across their departments in order to coordinate and carry to the entire research programs. They got an Incubation Cell which coordinates and leverages the teamwork strategy of excellence driving innovations and entrepreneurship, which consists of cutting-edge research as well as industrial interactions.

Notable Alumni

Padma Bhushan Kris Gopalakrishnan, one of the seven founders of Infosys and the Chairman of Axilor Ventures got an M.Sc. in Physics in 1977 and M.Tech. in C.S.in 1979 from IIT-Madras. Padma Shri PremWatsa, the “Canadian Warren Buffet” graduated from IIT-Madras with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Padma Bhushan B. Muthuraman, Vice Chairman of TATA Steel studied Metallurgical Engineering at IIT-Madras. Padma Bhushan B. N. Suresh, the Aerospace Scientist took his master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1969. Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan, the co-founders of Walmart Labs, Junglee and Cambrian Ventures graduated with B.Tech. in Computer Science from IIT-Madras in 1989 and 1988 respectively. Sowmya Srinivasan, the famous Carnatic Music Singer holds an M.Sc. in Chemistry degree from 1992 from the esteemed institute. Padma Shri Anant Agarwal, CEO of edX and widely known for MITx completed his Bachelor’s education from IIT, Madras.
