Overview

Initially referred to as the College of Engineering in 1961, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi came into being following the “Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963 which recognized it as an institution of national importance. It was later conferred the status of a deemed university which entailed complete autonomy over its academic policy, examinations and degrees awarded

The Institute is among one of the 7 old IITs from 23 which was created as expertise centers to impart training, research and advancement in the fields of Engineering, Science & Technology in India.

Since the commencement of the institute, it has recorded over 48,000 alumnae from different disciplines which includes Engineering, Physical & Social Sciences, Management, Art & Humanities. Out Of these, about 5070 were awarded Ph.D. degrees.

Today these former pupils serve as scientists, technical experts, operation managers and entrepreneurs. Not only the graduates have chosen to work on their original disciplines, but also have tried to excel in the field of administrative facilities, politics and even in NGOs to make a solid contribution in the development of the nation.

Academic Performance

Considered to be one of the top most college in India, IIT Delhi not only offers B.Tech. programs in different fields but also provide dual degree B.Tech.-cum-M.Tech. programs for the new entrants who want to pursue their dreams in the field of Engineering & Technology and the admissions to the above said programs are only done through Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced.

This establishment likewise offers postgraduate programmes granting M.Tech. (by coursework), M.S. (by research), M.Sc., M. Des., MBA (DMS Delhi) under different branches. The new entrants can get admission to M.Tech. courses predominantly by applying through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Students interested in pursuing M.Des. (Master of Design) can get admissions through Common Entrance Examination for Design(CEED), and those interested in M.Sc. and MBA, can apply through the Joint Admission Test for Masters(JAM) and Common Admission Test(CAT) respectively.

Research & Development

IIT Delhi particularly launched an “Industrial Research & Development (IRD) Unit” to provide dedicated and expert support for the smooth functioning of Research projects, Consulting services and relevant R&D areas of work.

Alongside educating and scholastic exploration prompting doctoral certificate, the foundation gives high preference to innovative work ventures supported by public and global organizations and client associations.

Notable Alumni

Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal (not related), co-founders of the Indian e-commerce platform Flipkart studied computer science engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Vinod Khosla, billionaire businessman and venture capitalist, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and founder of Khosla Ventures holds a B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi. Sameer Gehlaut, the Founder-Chairman of the ‘Indiabulls Group’ studied Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1995. Raghuram Rajan, the Indian Economist who served as the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India passed his Bachelor’s in electrical engineering in 1985 from IIT Delhi with the “Director’s Gold Medal” as the ‘best all-round student’. Kaustubh Khade, after graduating from IIT-Delhi, took up kayaking as a challenge and in five years has become one of the top professional kayakers from India. Chetan Bhagat, the celebrated Indian author graduated in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Delhi.
