Overview

Indian Statistical Institute, ISI, is a prime center of learning committed towards the research and application of statistics, natural sciences and social sciences.

Founded in Kolkata by Professor P.C. Mahalanobis, ISI came into existence on 17th December 1931 as a single, teaching and accommodative Institute by an act of the erstwhile Indian Parliament in 1959 and acquired the class of an Institution of National Importance.

Initially registered as a non-profit scholarly community on 28 April 1932 under the Societies Registration Act (XXI of 1860), ISI is currently listed under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act XXVI of 1961 which was revised in 1964.

Subsequently, two centers in Delhi and Bangalore were established along with a chain of units at Baroda, Mumbai, Pune, Coimbatore, Chennai, and Hyderabad.


Departments

Economics and Planning Unit: This unit at Delhi goes under the Social Sciences Department of ISI. Research is taken in the fields of applied economics and econometrics, macroeconomics, econometric methods, time series analysis and economic statistics.

Considered as one of the finest economics divisions in India, the Economics and Planning Unit at ISI accepts new entrants at the Master’s position through a two-year program in Master of Science in Quantitative Economics (MSQE).

After the completion of the course, MSQE students are positioned well in the industry with reputed companies like Citibank, HP Analytics, ICICI Bank, JP Morgan Chase as well as in the Ph.D. programmes.  Students have also acquired grants from reputed Universities like Harvard, MIT, University of Pennsylvania to name a few.

Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research Unit: The SQC and OR wings of the institute spanning across 10 units all over the nation are involved in all-encompassing consultation with industries and organizations including teaching, research and training as well. Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit: The Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit plays an active role in the study of areas related to Mathematics, Probability, and Statistics. They also provide a Master’s program in Statistics as well as doctoral programs in Mathematics and Statistics.
