Indian Institute of Mass Communication also known as IIMC, is the reputed Indian media center of learning which is funded as well as promoted by the Government of India and is situated in New Delhi. The IIMC is an autonomous society that is under the supervision of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. On 17 August 1965, the then Minister in charge of the Information and Broadcasting, Indira Gandhi inaugurated the institute. IIMC was started with a small staff, including two consultants from UNESCO.

Academic Performance

A good number of core short courses that extends from one week and extends to three months’ duration were added later on by the Institute in order to meet the training necessities of communication professionals working across various media or publicity outfits of the central or even the state governments and public sector organizations. IIMC took up a variety of disciplines including print journalism, television journalism, radio journalism, photojournalism, communication research, advertising, development communication, and public relations.

Apart from that the institute also offers Diploma Course in Development Journalism for non-aligned as well as developing countries.IIMC was basically established in order to provide various training to the officers of the Indian Information Service. They also conduct a number of specialized short-term courses every year to meet the training needs of various media personnel who are working in government as well as public sector organizations.

Research & Development

About 160 research, as well as evaluation studies, are going under the institute on various areas of development themes related to public health and behavior, broadcasting and press policies, social change, multimedia campaigns, non-conventional energy, political elections, social justice and empowerment, film censorship, out-migration, etc. The impact assessments of the media campaign as well as their activities of various media units are carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of I&B is one of the consistent features of the entire research activity.

Department of Communication Research involves in collaborations with professional communicators, scholars, and members of the media industry on a variety of research initiatives. It is capable of providing various educational offerings and they establish better standards of best practices. The students & trainees at IIMC are given proper guidance on various research assignments. The aspirants are exposed to different areas of media and communication research and it is also enabling them to relate research with their own professional practice.

Notable Alumni

Nidhi Razdan, former executive editor of NDTV and the primary presenter of the Left, Right & Center- the NDTV 24×7 show, an associate professor of Journalism at Harvard University, studied Post-graduate Diploma in Radio and TV Journalism at IIMC Delhi from 1998 to 99. Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Ravish Kumar, the journalist and media personality did his post-graduate Diploma in Hindi Journalism from IIMC. Neelesh Mishra, the journalist, author, lyricist, scriptwriter and storyteller on radio, most known for his show on BIG FM 92.7- “Yaadon ka Idiot Box with Neelesh Mishra”, studied at IIMC Delhi. Aishwarya Rituparna Pradhan, India’s first openly transgender civil servant officer is an alumnus of IIMC. Ashoka fellow, Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, Anshu Gupta who founded the social enterprise “Goonj” an NGO is an alumnus of IIMC Delhi. Vartika Nanda, the founder of “Tinka-Tinka”, a movement for achieving Prison Reform, taught TV journalism at IIMC Delhi as an associate professor for three years.
