Overview

Jamia Millia Islamia is a Central University located in the Jamia Nagar of New Delhi. It was originally established at Aligarh, during the British Raj in 1920, and was moved later to the current location in Okhla in 1935. UGC then conferred the university with Deemed status in 1962 and on 26 December 1988, the university was given the central university status. Jamia Millia Islamia featured at the top in the list of all of the Central Universities in India in 2020.

Academic Performance

Jamia Millia Islamia has a total of nine faculties under which it offers academic and extension programs.
  • Faculty of Law: was established in 1989 and they were initially offering only the three-year LL.B. course till the early 2000s. And later on, they offered additional courses that are integrated 5 Years B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) which are the courses for the UG students. It was commenced from the academic year 2002-2003. It also offers specialized courses for postgraduate students and Ph.D. programs.
  • Faculty of Engineering and Technology: was established in 1985 with the Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineering departments. Departments of Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering and Aeronautics and Applied Sciences & Humanities and  University Polytechnic degree were added subsequently by 1996.
  • Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics: has the Department of Architecture and it offers the following programs- B.Arch. (regular and self-financed), M. Arch., and M. Ekistics.
  • Faculty of Humanities and Languages: has got nine departments offering programs in M.Phil.(pre-PhD), Ph.D., and undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and certificate courses.
  • Faculty of Fine Arts: has got six departments offering programs in Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.), Ph.D., Bachelor of Fine Arts or B.F.A., diploma as well as certificate courses.
  • Faculty of Social Sciences: has seven departments constituting Psychology, Economics, Adult & Continuing Education, Political Science, Sociology, Social Work and Commerce& Business Studies.
  • Faculty of Natural Sciences: has eight departments that are prominent in their area of implications. The departments spread over chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility, Biotechnology, Bioscience, and Diploma in Unani Pharmacy, Geography and Computer Science.
  • Faculty of Education: specializes in quality training and providing education to budding teachers through two departments- Educational Studies and Institute of Advanced Studies in Education.
  • Faculty of Dentistry: offers an undergraduate B.D.S. program.

Notable Alumni

Padma Vibhushan Akhlaq Ur Rahman Kidwai, a chemist and politician, who served as the governor of Bihar, West Bengal and Haryana, studied B.A. at the university in 1940. Padma Shri Barkha Dutt, who emerged as a prominent journalist after her frontline reporting on the KargilWar received her Master’s in Mass Communications from Jamia Millia Islamia Mass Communication Research Center in Delhi. Padma Shree and Arjuna Awardee Virender Sehwag, former Indian cricketer who is regarded as one of the most destructive batsmen of all time graduated from Jamia Millia Islamia. SRK began studying for a master’s in mass comm. at Jamia, but left to pursue acting. Kabir Khan, the filmmaker known for his high budget masala action films did his masters from Jamia Millia Islamia. Gagan Ajit Singh, the field hockey striker attended Jamia for graduation. Ritu Kapur, the CEO of Quintillion Media and co-founder of “The Quint” holds a master’s in Film and TV production from AJK Mass Communication Research Centre of Jamia Millia Islamia. Wasiq Khan, the distinguished Production Designer and Art director in Bollywood famous for Gangs of Wasseypur and Ram-Leela graduated in 1996 from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Jamia Millia Islamia.
