Institute of Chemical Technology

Institute of Chemical Technology which was earlier known as Bombay University’s University Department of Chemical Technology, is deemed to be university that specializes in chemical technology located in Mumbai. The major focus of the institution is on training and research in the fields of chemical technology, chemical engineering and pharmacy. The institute established in 1933 was awarded deemed-to-be university status in 2008, making it the one and only state-funded deemed-to-be university in India.

Based on its wonderful performance over the period of time, the Maharashtra government granted it the Elite Status and Centre of Excellence in the State Assembly on 20th April 2012. This is almost a singular distinction accorded to any institute in the entire nation.ICT offers three-degree programs at the undergraduate level- Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Chemical Engineering. The institute offers several other courses even at the master’s level which offer various specializations in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Technology, Pharmacy and general science courses.

The institution has a solid celebrated research culture and is considered to be the best post-graduate center in the country. It is also comparable to other top-level institutes in the world. Currently, the institution graduates 100 Ph.D. per year. ICT shares strong relationships with various industries and other governments since many industry-sponsored projects emerge from ICT. In 2011, the Ministry of Textiles recognized ICT as the National Center of Excellence in Sportswear and sanctioned with a grant of around ₹24.5crore for researching sports-related goods and apparels.

With this, ICT has become the first-ever institute in the country to conduct research on sports fabrics. ICT had hosted several research centers within the campus as well. These include DBT-ICT (Department of Biotechnology), ICT-DAE (Department of Atomic Energy), Center for Energy Biosciences, UGC Networking Resource Centre in Chemical Engineering, Center for Chemical Engineering Education and Research, and Center for Green Technology.

Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani, the richest man in Asia received a BE degree in Chemical engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. Padma Bhushan Jyeshtharaj Balachandra Joshi, the nuclear scientist is known for his innovations in the designs of nuclear reactors passed BE and ME in chemical engineering in 1971 and 1972 respectively, from then UDCT, now ICT. Padma Vibhushan Raghunath Anant Mashelkar joined the University of Bombay’s University Dept. of Chemical Technology, now ICT from here he earned his BE in chemical engineering in 1966 and Ph.D. in 1969. Padma Shri Keki Hormusji Gharda, a prominent chemical entrepreneur received his B.Sc. and B.Tech. degree from UDCT, now ICT. Kallam Anji Reddy, the founder-Chairman of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories had obtained his B.Sc. (Tech.) in pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals from UDCT. Narotam Sekhsaria who had established Ambuja Cements has a Chemical Engineering Degree from ICT. Ashwin Dani the non-executive Chairman of Asian Paints Ltd. has a Bachelor of Science and Technology in pigment, paints and varnish from UDCT. Uncle Pai, the Walt Disney of India is an alumnus of ICT. Atul Kasbekar the famous fashion photographer and film producer, known for his Kingfisher Calendar shoots had joined UDCT for chemical engineering, but dropped out after a year to become a photographer and went on to join Brooks Institute and was the topper of his batch.
