Overview

IIT Bombay was established in the year of 1958 and is one of its kind. The institute is famous worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research and is highly reputed for the outstanding skill and capacity of students graduating from its undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Because of this reason, the institute attracts the best students from the country for its bachelor’s, masters and doctoral programs. Both researches as well as academic programs of IITB is pioneered by excellent faculties, and many of them are internationally known for their remarkable contributions.

Academic Performance

IIT Bombay is known for 2, 4 and 5-year programs for which the entry is through Advanced and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, JEE. It offers bachelor’s degrees in engineering, 4 year Bachelor of Science degree and a Five Year integrated Master of Science degree. It also offers 2 or 3 Year MTech course, and a few other courses too. The institute even has a comprehensive graduate program that offers doctoral degrees in Technology, Mathematics, Science, and engineering. At present, the institute has a total of around 15 academic departments across a total of 20 centers, four interdisciplinary programs including a Management Program and a school of excellence.

Various educational programs include engineering, physical sciences, humanities and social sciences such as Philosophy, English, Psychology, Economics, and Sociology and into other management studies. Over the period of time, the institute was able to create a niche for their innovative and various strategical short-term courses that are implemented through continuing education as well as distance education program.


Research & Development

IITB is among the 23 higher Institutes of Technology in India that is set up in order to make available facilities for higher education, research as well as training across various programs of Science and Technology.

Faculties from the institution undertake several industry-sponsored research and consultancy projects. Such projects are funded by various national agencies such as the Aeronautical Development Agency, Department of Science and Technology, Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Electronics, and Department of Space. Many ongoing projects are of national importance. Few of the projects are actually funded by international agencies.  An estimate of about 400 on-going sponsored projects is happening every year.

Notable Alumni

Padma Bhushan Nandan Nilekani, the entrepreneur, bureaucrat and politician, the co-founder and non-executive chairman of Infosys got his Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay. Padma Bhushan Manohar Parrikar, who served as the Chief Minister of Goa till his death from pancreatic cancer graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Bombay. Pranav Mistry, the computer scientist and inventor, best known for his work on SixthSense and Samsung Galaxy Gear is an alumnus of IIT Bombay. Jairam Ramesh, the famous Economist and Member of Parliament graduated in Mechanical Engineering with a B.Tech. from IIT Bombay in 1975. Nitesh Tiwari, the award-winning film-maker, writer, director and lyricist, best known for his works Chillar Party and Dangal graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy and Material Science Engineering in 1996 from IIT Bombay.
