NID Ahmedabad was founded as a collaborative venture of the Indian Government, the Ford Foundation, and the Sarabhai family. It was initially named the National Institute of Industrial Design and was set up as a fully autonomous institution in 1961 at Ahmedabad. Ever since its advent, the institute has consistently grown by leaps and bounds and is today hailed as one of the finest institutions for Industrial Communication, Textile and Integrated (Experiential) Design at a global scale. Functioning under the Ministry of Commerce of the Government of India, it achieved the status of the “Institute of National Importance” in 2014.
The institute’s credibility is further reinforced by its recognition by the Department of Scientific Industrial Research of the Government of India as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. As an institute, NID aims to impart quality education to its students at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees through an integrated curriculum. This can be effectively achieved with a flexible blend of student-centered learning manifested through courses and assignments which impart multidimensional learning and foster the spirit of creative expression amongst students.
As far as NID’s programmes are concerned, NID offers design courses at all levels i.e., B. Des., M. Des., and Ph. D. in design. One can avail of a course after getting selected through a rigorous selection process which includes qualifying a grueling entrance exam.
Continuing Education Programme / CEP
CEP conducts routine design workshops, courses, and exercises that give the upper hand through a plan to the businesses or associations or organizations. Through its Online Design Education Program, NODE, NID is adjusting to creative training patterns empowered by the computerized world to connect with a bigger and different crowd. These workshops and courses are useful for industry professionals as well as NID faculty and students.
In addition to its educational prowess, NID also has an extremely proficient placement cell that organizes annual Industry Interface and invites top fashion and textile companies for recruitment which includes the likes of Nail Textiles, Bharat Silks, Myntra, etc. as well as numerous NGOs and public sector firms also grace the campus during the placement season.
