Overview

It started in the nineteenth century when the industries as we perceive today were non-existent. Started as a Civil Engineering College on 24th November 1856 in the premises of the Writers Building, Calcutta this institution has gone under a series of name changes to become today’s Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. In all these 163 years it has grown from meeting the requirement of engineers in the Public Works Department of Kolkata to become an institute of national importance empowering the nation and its students.

Academic performance

IIEST ranks 21st in NIRF-2020 ranking among the engineering institutes of India. It became the first college to get the name Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) in India in 2014. It is the 3rd engineering college in India considering the year of establishment, but if you consider the year of graduation it is the 2nd oldest engineering college in India. It has 16 departments and 8 schools. It has over 250 faculty members and a student capacity of over 4000. It gives an opportunity to the students to choose from a wide range of disciplines starting from Humanities and Social Sciences to Aerospace Engineering and Applied Mechanics.

Some of the special achievements by the students of IIEST :
    • Debashish Sur, a student of MET ’18 batch has been selected for Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship.
    • Divyansh Jha & Anurag Jha from the Department of Mining Engineering have received the overall Winner’s Trophy at the Mineral Development Awareness and Quiz Programme sponsored by Tata Steel.
    • Saikat Dey, former B.Tech. student of Department of Electrical Engineering has been awarded by INAE, the Indian National Academy of Engineering

Research and development

The University is going good because of its tradition of not compromising quality-check and, over the last three years, more than 25 government and non-government funding agencies like AICTE, UGC, CSIR, DST, DIT, DAE, BRNS, DRDO, ISRO, UNICEF have stepped forward to sponsor about 100 Research Projects. Presently the university is accelerating its collaborative and sponsored research. It collaborates with different institutions and industries for augmentation of its learning programs according to the current scientific and industry standards. The institution has an active industry-institute partnership cell that deals with Liaison with the Industries, and Programs for the Corporates, from Laboratory to Production, Student skill-set improvement, and Research Alignment workshops by the Corporate, Faculty Development Program.
