KIIT that used to be a vocational training centre, has developed into a leading university today with a strong interdisciplinary culture and a commitment to teaching excellence. The meteoric rise of the institution must be attributed to the vision of its founder Prof. Achyuta Samanta.

KIIT’s research portfolio extends across many different areas including, but not limited to, biotechnology, medicine; rural management; physical activity and nutrition; education; and social and mental health.

• Dutee Chand (born 3 February 1996) is an Indian professional sprinter and current national champion in the women's 100 metres event
• Tanmay Mohanty, known professionally as Babushan Mohanty is an Indian film actor, and playback singer, known primarily for his work in Odia-language cinema.
• Amiya Kumar Mallick (born 14 November 1992) is an Indian sprinter who holds the 100 metres national record of 10.26 seconds.
