MHRM Department of Humanities and Social Science, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur

Kharagpur, W.B, India - 721302

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, established in 1951, occupies a hallowed position in the Indian educational landscape as the first and largest of the IITs. While its reputation as a premier engineering hub is global, its contributions to the management domain, particularly through the Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM) program within the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), represent a sophisticated integration of technical analytical rigor and human-centric strategic management. The HSS department was founded at the very inception of the institute to provide a value-based liberal education, ensuring that the nation’s scientists and engineers were grounded in ethical and social responsibilities. This foundational philosophy has evolved over seven decades, culminating in a specialized HR program that is uniquely positioned within a technical ecosystem, blending technical expertise with managerial acumen to produce strategists and leaders.

Historical Evolution and Institutional Architecture

The historical trajectory of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is inextricably linked to the post-colonial history of India. The classrooms, laboratories, and administrative offices were originally housed in the Hijli Detention Camp, now known as Shaheed Bhawan, a historic building where political revolutionaries were once imprisoned under British rule. This transition from a site of colonial incarceration to a temple of higher learning symbolizes the institute's commitment to national service, as reflected in its motto "Yogaḥ Karmasu Kauśalam" or "Excellence in Action is Yoga".

The department’s foray into specialized management education began in 1982 with the launch of an M.Tech. program in Human Resource Development and Management. Recognizing the shifting paradigms of the corporate world, this program underwent meticulous and continuous revision, leading to its rebranding in 2010 as the Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM). This change was not merely nomenclature; it signified a shift toward a more professional, industry-oriented curriculum designed to meet the demands of a continuously evolving business scenario.

Disciplinary Diversity and Academic Ecosystem

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences functions as a multidisciplinary core within IIT Kharagpur, housing a diverse range of disciplines including Economics, English Language and Literature, Linguistics, Psychology, Human Resource Management, History, Sanskrit, Sociology, German, and Philosophy. This internal diversity allows for a rare cross-pollination of ideas where an MHRM student might engage with a Ph.D. scholar researching Critical Theory or an economics student specializing in Game Theory.

The academic ecosystem is further enriched by collaborative associations. The MHRM program is offered in academic association with the Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM) and the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSoIPL). This partnership allows students to draw on the specialized knowledge of management from VGSoM and the legal complexities of labor and patent law from RGSoIPL, providing a comprehensive toolkit for modern HR leadership.

Preparation & FAQs

There are two main components of the MHRM (IIT KGP) selection process which need careful preparation. Students must first prepare for CAT 2024 through a classroom or online program, over the course of at least one year. After theoretical study, it is important to work out sample papers and mock tests, to ensure accuracy and speed of solutions. Even though there is no predetermined cut-off, students should still check the CAT score range of the previous batch, and use it to come up with a target score, and ensure that their standard in the mock test matches the goal.

The GD and PI rounds require strong communication skills and the ability to make logical inferences based on business scenarios provided. The best way to prepare for these rounds are through mock sessions organized by CAT preparation agencies.
