IIT Indore - Indian Institute of Technology

Khandwa Road, Simrol, Indore, M.P, India - 453552

The Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore), established in 2009 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, has rapidly matured from a nascent second-generation institute into a leading powerhouse of technical education and interdisciplinary research. Originally operating from temporary sites at the Institute of Engineering and Technology of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya and the Silver Springs campus, the institute successfully transitioned to its permanent 501.42-acre campus at Simrol in October 2015. This physical consolidation marked a pivotal moment in the institute's history, allowing for the realization of a unique architectural and pedagogical vision that integrates residential living with high-end academic research. Today, the institute is recognized as an Institute of National Importance, a status that underscores its role in shaping the scientific and technological future of India.

Infrastructure and the Simrol Campus Ecosystem

The Simrol campus is designed as a sustainable, fully residential ecosystem that promotes a "living-learning" philosophy. The architectural layout emphasizes "Academic Pods"—specialized structures where laboratories, faculty offices, and classrooms are situated in proximity to facilitate spontaneous collaboration between different engineering and science disciplines. The campus is not only a site for education but also a center for community growth, housing facilities such as a Kendriya Vidyalaya, a creche, and a health center that serves students, staff, and their dependents.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC)

The intellectual core of the institute is the Learning Resource Centre, which has evolved beyond the traditional library model to become a comprehensive digital knowledge repository. The LRC provides a sophisticated environment for research, offering air-conditioned and Wi-Fi-enabled reading halls designed to accommodate intensive study. Its collection is meticulously curated to support the institute's focus on advanced STEM research and humanities.

Admission Process and Selection Criteria

Admissions at IIT Indore are strictly merit-based, utilizing national-level entrance examinations to filter for the highest caliber of students. The process is decentralized through various national portals depending on the level of the degree.

Undergraduate Admissions (B.Tech, B.S., B.Des)

The primary gateway for undergraduate engineering programs is the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). This is a two-stage process: candidates must first qualify in the JEE Main and then secure a rank in the JEE Advanced.

  • Eligibility: Candidates must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) for the first time in either 2025 or 2026 for the 2026 session, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

  • Score Requirements: A minimum of 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or being in the top 20 percentile of the respective board.

  • Seat Allocation: Conducted through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) based on All India Rank (AIR) and candidate preferences.

The Bachelor of Design (B.Des) program, launching in 2025 under the School of Innovation, utilizes the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED).

Postgraduate Admissions (M.Tech, M.Sc, M.A., MS)

Postgraduate admissions rely on specialized national exams tailored to the discipline.

  • M.Tech: Admission is based on a valid GATE score followed by counseling through the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP). Minimum eligibility includes a B.Tech/BE with 60% aggregate or 6.0 CPI.

  • M.Sc: Candidates must qualify for the IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc). For Biotechnology, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Biotechnology (GAT-B) is required.

  • MS (Research): Selection involves shortlisting based on GATE/JAM scores, followed by a written test or personal interview.

  • M.A. (English): Admission is typically based on academic records and an institute-conducted interview or test.

Doctoral Admissions (PhD)

PhD candidates are evaluated based on their performance in national exams such as GATE, NET, JRF, CEED, or INSPIRE, followed by a departmental written test and a personal interview. The institute offers PhD programs in all 13 departments and several centers, including the Mehta Family School of Sustainability and the JP Narayan National Centre of Excellence in the Humanities.

Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Indore located in Madhya Pradesh, known as IIT Indore or IITI, is an institute of national importance established by the Government of India in 2009. It is one of the eight new IITs, started by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (India), Government of India. The institution started functioning from 2009-10 in a temporary campus at Institute of Engineering and Technology of Devi Ahilyabai University under mentorship of IIT Bombay. Shri Arjun Singh, the Union HRD minister, laid the foundation of the permanent campus, spread over an area of around 501.42-acre (2.1 km2), on 17th February 2009 at Simrol, a location on Khandwa Road about 25 km from the city of Indore.

Vision

To inculcate and promote an academic community with independence of thought and free expression of research ideas.
To provide a balance of continuously updated knowledge with extensive hands on training on sophisticated facilities.
To engage with industry and external partners for curricula design.

Adjunct faculty and distinguished international visiting faculty to form important components of institute is teaching and research profile.

Research

The research group under Dr. Aruna Tiwari, Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Technology Indore, in collaboration with ICAR-Indian Institute of Soybean Research (IISR), Indore develops the scalable machine learning algorithm for handling huge genome data. For that, the Soybean genome data is collected from ICAR-IISR, Indore. In 2016, a research lab equipped with Apache Spark clusters setup to handle huge genomics data. Recently, she got access of super-computing infrastructure (PARAM SHAKTI from IIT Kharagpur and PARAM SIDHI from CDAC) for processing huge genomics data at exascale level. This collaboration will result in the development of new computational tools for genome analysis, identify unique and new genes to improve crop production with higher yields, drought resistance, disease resistance and improved crop quality in India. The innovative NGS analysis technologies will help by significantly reducing the time and cost for developing better varieties of crops.
