Course Highlight

Wuhan University offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses through 6 Faculties, which are further subdivided into schools and colleges.

  • The Faculty of Humanities provides UG and PG taught and research programs through seven Schools: Philosophy, Chinese Classics, Chinese Language and Literature, Foreign Languages and Literature, Journalism and Communication, Art, and History.
  • The Faculty of Social Sciences conducts undergraduate and postgraduate programs through seven Schools: Economics and Management, Law, Marxism, Political Science and Public Administration, Sociology, Information Management, and the Institute of Education Sciences.
  • The Faculty of Sciences teaches UG and PG courses, and carries out research via its six Schools: Mathematics and Statistics, Physics and Technology, Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, Life Sciences, Resource and Environmental Sciences, and the Institute For Advanced Studies.

  • The Faculty of Medical Sciences provides UG and PG taught and research programs through seven Schools: Medicine, Immunology and Metabolism, Basic Medical Sciences, Health Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Stomatology, and the Medicine Vocational and Technical School of Wuhan University. There are also two Hospitals affiliated with the University: Renmin and Zhongnan.

Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate international applicants to Wuhan University must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Possession of an international passport.
  • Sound physical and mental health.
  • Willingness to abide by the laws of China and the rules of the University.
  • Aged between 18 and 25 years as of September of the year of program entry. Applicants who are younger than 18 years of age can also apply, if they are able to provide details of a local guardian.
  • Applicants to courses where the medium of instruction is Chinese must submit a certificate from the HSK Level 4 test, with a minimum qualifying score of 180.
  • Applicants to courses that are taught in English must submit TOEFL scores (minimum performance 80) or an IELTS certificate (6.0 or better).
  • All applicants to undergraduate courses must submit high school degree certificates and transcripts; the level of performance will determine shortlisting status for highly competitive courses.

Postgraduate international applicants must satisfy all the above criteria, with the substitution of undergraduate degree certificates and transcripts for high school documents. Personal statements and Letters of Recommendation may also be required for certain courses, as well as a CV for professional programs like the Master of Business Administration.

Admission

The following application process steps are to be followed by International candidates (both undergraduate and postgraduate) seeking admission to Wuhan University:

  • Creation of an account on the online admission portal.
  • Completion of the form by filling in all details related to past education and / or professional experience.
  • Uploading the key documents required, in the form of notarized scanned PDFs:
    • Passport identity page.
    • High school / undergraduate degree transcripts.
    • High school / undergraduate degree completion certificate (provisional in case the candidate is currently pursuing the final year of such a degree).
    • Bank statement showing access to funds of USD 5000 or more.
    • Chinese HSK test certificate / TOEFL or IELTS scores (depending on whether the medium of instruction is Chinese or English).
    • Recent physical examination report.
  • Payment of the application one-time fee of 800 RMB.

Once the applications are submitted, the review system allows the university to shortlist the best candidates. The last two stages are the interview and entrance test; candidates who have an exceptional academic record may be exempt from either or both of these stages. Scholarship applications must also be submitted at this time. Once the university sends out admission letters, students can confirm their acceptance and pay the first year’s fees online.

Fees

Undergraduate international students at Wuhan University pay tuition fees that vary by faculty and medium of instruction. Here are some indicative numbers:

  • Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences:
    • RMB 20,000 (USD 2,912) per year, for courses taught in Chinese.
    • RMB 23,000 per year, for courses taught in English.
  • Faculties of Science, Information Technology and Engineering:
    • RMB 24,000 per year, for courses taught in Chinese.
    • RMB 28,000 per year, for courses taught in English.
  • Faculty of Medicine and Stomatology:
    • RMB 30,000 per year, for courses taught in Chinese.
    • RMB 40,000 per year, for courses taught in English.

The fees for international Master’s students are as follows:

  • Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences:
    • RMB 23,000 (USD 3,349) per year, for courses taught in Chinese.

  • Faculties of Science, Information Technology and Engineering:
    • RMB 28,000 per year, for courses taught in Chinese.

The Master of Business Administration degree costs RMB 50,000 per year (Chinese medium) or RMB 53,000 per year (English medium).

    • RMB 30,000 (USD 4,368) per year, for courses taught in Chinese.

Accommodation fees at Wuhan University vary according to the choice of dormitory and type of accommodation. The lowest housing option starts at 600 RMB per month (for a single room shared by two people), and the highest cost option is a single flat, priced at 1400 RMB. The range of annual costs, for 9 months spent on campus, is between 5,400 and 12,600 RMB per year.

Student service fees include:

  • One time application fee of RMB 800.
  • Yearly medical insurance fee of RMB 800.
  • One time physical examination fee of RMB 300.
  • Residence permit fees of RMB 1,000 for three years or more.
  • Room deposit of RMB 500; this is refundable.
  • Textbook fees, estimated as lying between RMB 200 and 1000 per year.

The university estimates that other living costs, including food, travel, and personal items, come up to RMB 9,000 to RMB 18,000 per academic year.

Campus facilities

Wuhan University has four campuses, which are organized according to the academic Faculties they house: Humanities and Sciences, Engineering, Information Sciences, and Medicine.

There are over a hundred Student Organizations at Wuhan University that are divided into six types:

  • Ideology and Politics: For example, the Marxist Society.
  • Academic Science and Technology: For example, the French Association, the English Debating Society, the Microsoft Student Club, and the Boundary and Ocean Research Association.
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship: For example, the Student Association for International Organizations and the Innovative Inventions and Intellectual Property Association.
  • Art and Sports: For example, Taekwondo, Ballroom Dance, Flute, Ping-pong, Hiking, Drama, Chess, Chinese Traditional Wushu, and Bicycle Riding.
  • Volunteering and Public Welfare: For example, Voluntary Teaching and Animal Preservation.
  • Self-Discipline and Mutual Assistance: For example, the Association for College Student Mental Health.

There are four main arts and cultural festivals that are celebrated at Wuhan University. The Luojia Golden Fall Art Festival is the oldest, and is a platform for the best artists on campus to exhibit their work and take part in friendly competitions. The Luojia Golden Fall International Cultural Festival is meant for international students to educate their fellow students about the cultural heritage and achievements of their countries. The Students' Association's Cultural Festival hosts over 60 competitions within the university; some are also open to students of other Chinese institutions. The Campus Supermarket of Cultural Activities is the newest annual event, and contains over 30 cultural exhibitions and competitions.

The most skilled athletes and sportspeople at Wuhan University participate in the University League Tournaments. There are seven of these: Volleyball, Basketball, Football, Badminton, ping-pong, track and field, and the Winter Marathon.

Each campus of Wuhan University contains at least one gym that serves as a hub for indoor sports events and aquatics, fitness, and exercise classes. These facilities can be booked ahead of time if required. Each campus also contains several outdoor track and field venues, in addition to basketball, volleyball, and badminton courts. Skating rinks, swimming pools, and gymnastics areas can also be accessed.

There are 19 canteens and restaurants spread across the four campuses to ensure regular supply and availability of nutritious food to all university members. Banking facilities and exchange points for international currency are also present, as are stores and supermarkets that allow students to purchase essentials and personal items. Students on all four campuses can also use the hospitals associated with Wuhan University; these allow students to access medical care at a very low cost.

International students have many options for on-campus housing, with three dedicated buildings on the main campus and four on the campus of medicine. All rooms are air conditioned and provide high speed internet access. Shuttle bus services are available inside each campus, and there are also regular transport services among the different campuses of Wuhan University.

Scholarship

The Chinese Government Scholarship at Wuhan University (Belt and Road Program) is the flagship financial award for postgraduate students. Only students enrolled in certain majors from the Belt and Road countries may apply. Academic excellence is the main basis on which this scholarship is awarded, and students may apply directly to the university for the award, at the same time as they are filling out their admissions application. Winners of this scholarship get free tuition and living expenses.

The Sino-American Degree Study Scholarship Program is meant for US nationals to complete their UG or PG degree at Wuhan University. It provides a full tuition fee waiver, in addition to free housing, insurance, and a living allowance.

The Chinese Government Scholarship - High Level Postgraduate Program is similar to the Belt and Road Program in terms of perks, but all international applicants are eligible. Outstanding postgraduate applicants are eligible to apply for this award.

The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship is meant for students who would like to gain a Chinese teaching diploma at the university and who are under the age of 45. Candidates who clear the online application and the interview process will be offered a full tuition fee and living expense waiver for the one year duration of the program, and will also be given a stipend and free comprehensive medical insurance.
