While bursaries are given based on financial need, scholarships are given for academic achievement.

The University of Ottawa Admission Scholarship automatically awards between $1,000 and $3,000 to all qualified full-time students enrolled in a direct-entry faculty or the Civil Law Section of the Faculty of Law who have an average GPA of 85% or higher. For this scholarship, there is no need to apply; all qualified students will be given automatic consideration.

The promotion of a bilingual nation is a priority for the Canadian government. A bursary program for French as a Second Language was established in light of this. This bursary was established to encourage English-speaking Canadians to learn French and is administered by the Association des collèges et universités de la Francophonie canadienne (ACUFU) and Canadian Heritage.
