The University of Nottingham offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses through 5 Faculties, which are further subdivided into 40 Schools and Departments.
The University of Nottingham makes offers to a large proportion of its undergraduate applicants, with UCAS data from 2017 showing that 82% of UG applicants received an offer of admission.
Undergraduate applicants to UoN will normally be expected to have high grades in at least three subjects in the A-Level (or equivalent, for international students) examination, with some courses requiring a pass grade in a fourth course. Certain courses require a minimum performance in English in the GCSE (or equivalent Year 10) examinations. Course-specific information is available on the University website. Some courses (e.g., nursing, veterinary) may have additional entry requirements, e.g. interviews or tests.
The entry criteria (based on academic performance in high school) are different for each country, and a consolidated overview can be obtained from the country pages on the UoN website.
Eligibility criteria for postgraduate taught courses vary; all programmes require an applicant to submit supporting material to illustrate personal, academic, and professional experience. Undergraduate grades are an important part of the application, though the University is willing to consider impressive work experience in lieu of a degree in exceptional cases. If the candidate has completed a UG degree in a language other than English, or if English is not the applicant’s first language, IELTS scores are also required.
Applicants to undergraduate courses at UoN must submit their applications through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) website. The university looks for the following elements as part of the application:
Deadlines for UG applications are in line with timelines followed by other top universities in the UK: 25 January 2023 to be considered equally with other applicants, 30 June 2023 as the latest possible date in case seats are left after Round 1, and 15 October 2022 for Medicine and Dentistry courses (these are all for entry in 2023).
Postgraduate applicants can apply throughout the year, though it is recommended to apply at least two months before the start of the semester of interest so that places do not close. All PG applications must be submitted through the online system of the University. Most courses require the applicant to submit two academic / professional references, and all courses require degree / transcript scans. Along with the form, an application fee of £50 is needed to complete the submission. Once the University sends an email with an offer, candidates who accept it must pay a tuition fee deposit of £2,000 for visa purposes.
Undergraduate students from the United Kingdom at the University of Nottingham pay annual tuition fees of £9,250. Annual tuition fees for international students vary by course, and are either £20,000 or £26,500 for most courses, with Veterinary Medicine and Surgery priced at £33,250.
Postgraduate tuition fees also vary from course to course. Students from the UK pay approximately £10,000 per year for most courses; the maximum goes up to £13,700 p.a. The tuition fee for international students for most Masters courses is above £20,000 per year, and is not usually above £28,000.
Both UG and PG students should budget between £10,000 and £15,000 per year towards accommodation, travel, leisure, personal costs, and other academic costs.
The University of Nottingham campus has eight campuses spread across three countries. The four main academic campuses within the city of Nottingham are University Park, which is one of the largest of its kind in the UK, and is the hub of student activity, Jubilee, which is a green campus that has won awards for its sustainable design, Sutton Bonington, a partly rural campus that houses the Biosciences and Vet Schools, and King’s Meadow, where a large portion of the support functions of the university are based. The Medical School is located next to the University Park campus, and UoN also maintains a presence at the Nottingham City Hospital and Royal Derby Hospital.
The University of Nottingham opened an overseas campus at Ningbo, China, in 2004, becoming the first foreign university to establish a physical presence in China. It has also operated a campus at Semenyih, Malaysia, near Kuala Lumpur, since 2000. It was the first university from the United Kingdom to open a campus in the country.
The UoN gym is one of the most modern of any university in the UK, with a dedicated training area and state of the art cardio equipment. These can be connected to a central app so that members can track their progress against fitness goals. Any member of the University community with a sports and fitness membership can access multiple facilities, including a consultation session to come up with a customised fitness plan, weight training, and introduction session to other types of physical training, like indoor cycling and a nutritional regimen.
According to The Times in 2021, Nottingham was the Sports University of the Year. This prestigious award is testament to the world class sports facilities and programmes at the University. The David Ross Sports Village was built at a total cost of £40 million. It contains four large sports halls, a 25 metre swimming pool, a climbing wall, squash courts, martial arts venues, ten team changing rooms, and even a cafe. There are also extensive outdoor sports areas including a large pitch, viewing areas, and tennis courts. Finally, a Sports Injury clinic helps keep all athletes at their physical peak, with a hydrotherapy pool and physiotherapy options.
A unique feature of the sports community at the University of Nottingham is the provision made for inclusiveness, with all major sports having a provision for disabled students to play and represent the University. Alumni of UoN have achieved international success in sports, with the 2012 Olympics in London seeing five medals won by ex-students of the university.
The Careers and Employability Service coordinates internship and placement activities at the University of Nottingham. It provides four major services to current students: they can look up and research different career paths, they can use the online database to search for open jobs, they can work on their application material with guidance and mentorship, and they can set up meetings with employers. For postgraduate research students in particular, the service helps them think through careers both within academia and outside it.
There are multiple scholarships available at the University of Nottingham for outstanding international students.
The International Undergraduate Excellence Award entails financial support to the tune of a portion of the tuition fees for international students who display academic excellence and great motivation to pursue studies in their chosen course. The International Sporting Excellence Award is the sports equivalent of this scholarship. UG students are also allowed to accept scholarship funding from external organisations.
The Developing Solutions Masters Scholarship is the flagship award for postgraduate students from African, South Asian, and developing Commonwealth countries. The amount is substantial: either 50% or 100% of the entire tuition fee. The application must be submitted by mid-May of the year of entry, and applicants holding a PG offer at the university must demonstrate their vision to achieve lasting social, economic, or technological change within their home country. The GREAT scholarship is open to postgraduate students from Indonesia, Malaysia, and India and entails a tuition fee reduction of £10,000. Awardees are selected based on academic excellence, other achievements, and study and future plans.
