Eligibility Criteria

As of 2017, the University of Leeds made offers to 73% of applicants to undergraduate programmes. The most competitive courses have substantially lower offer rates.

Undergraduate entry criteria are a combination of minimum requirements for all UG courses, and course-specific criteria that can be found on the course webpages. The minimum eligibility criteria include:

  • English proficiency, as measured by high marks in GCSEs or equivalent Year 10 examinations for international students
  • Numeracy, with mathematics grade requirements varying by course
  • Three pass grades in A-Levels or equivalent Year 12 examinations for overseas students

Equivalent qualifications for different countries across the world can be found on the relevant University webpage.

Admissions qualifications for postgraduate degrees are highly dependent on the course, and are listed on the University website. These requirements will often have to be translated into equivalent entry criteria for international students. Applicants to Masters courses will also need to prove proficiency in English; this is usually done by submitting recent IELTS or ToEFL scores; multiple other English certifications are also accepted.

Admission

The application process for undergraduate courses at the University of Leeds is online, through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) website. The most important part of this application is the personal statement; the University lists the key elements it looks for and gives helpful advice on crafting an impactful narrative.

The University of Leeds also maintains a detailed timetable of the UG application process and deadlines. Medical and Dental applicants should submit their applications by 15 October of the year before they want to join the University, and all other candidates should look to apply by 25 January of the following year. By mid-May, the University sends out final offers, and candidates who wish to apply for University housing must complete that process by July 1. In case a student requires application support, different countries have University Representatives.

The first step of a postgraduate application to the University of Leeds is a detailed course search; given that there are elaborate course-specific criteria for each, it is important that those are checked first. Applications to these courses must be submitted through the relevant University portal. Uniquely among all the top universities in the UK, there is no application fee for online applications to PG courses. Three types of documents are needed for all postgraduate courses, academic transcripts / UG degree certificate, proof of English proficiency (test scores, e.g. IELTS), and (if applicable for international applicants) a scanned copy of a current / past UK visa. Some courses may require additional materials like a personal statement, a portfolio, or a detailed CV.

For applicants to postgraduate research degrees, the first step is to look up current research opportunities, and then apply to them via the research application portal maintained by the University.

Fees

Undergraduate students from the United Kingdom at the University of Leeds pay annual tuition fees of £9,250. Tuition fees for international students vary by course, and can be found on individual course pages. In general, the UG tuition fees are above £22,000 per year for most courses, with Medicine and Dentistry courses being substantially more expensive.

Postgraduate fees are not set for UK students by the Government, and therefore each course has different tuition fees for international and home students. The course finder tool helps applicants find the tuition fees for each course. Most courses fix the tuition fee payable by UK students at £10,750 per year; international student fees can vary from £10,750 annually to nearly £30,000.

Other costs that are relevant to both Uto G and PG students include accommodation fees and living costs, including travel and personal expenses, and other academic costs, including digital devices and books. These can add up to more than £10,000 per year; the budget calculator tool can help make a rough estimate.

Scholarship

Most of the undergraduate scholarships at the University are specific to a subject / Faculty, and all of them make awards based on academic excellence. Every School offers its own Scholarships, with all details available on the relevant University webpage. These typically are fixed amount scholarships that help defray tuition fee costs to a partial extent. There are also purely needs-based scholarships where students from the UK with low household incomes can apply for funding worth £3,000  per year.

The most prestigious postgraduate scholarships at the University for international students are the International Excellence Scholarships. These are large awards: up to a 50% reduction in tuition fees is available, and they are awarded to students in each Faculty. The University maintains a webpage through which students can learn more about this scholarship, the eligibility criteria, and the application deadlines (typically in March and May every year).

Postgraduate scholarships for UK students include the Leeds Masters Scholarships, where an award of £7,000 is made to eligible Home students from communities that are under-represented in the student body; these are funded by alumni donations.

Sports Scholarships are intended for elite athletes who compete at the highest world level while completing their degrees at Leeds. These students are also eligible for Coaching Scholarships, where they work part-time to train other members of the community.
