Campus facilities

The Beijing campus of UIBE is home to several modern architectural buildings that collectively serve the academic, research, and housing needs of the university. Natural beauty is also a key feature of the Beijing campus, with multiple gardens, sports grounds, and even a lake. In 2021, UIBE opened a campus in Israel that would initially concentrate on UG courses in business and management. This is located in the city of Petah Tikva, and was opened to mark the seventieth anniversary of the founding of UIBE.

The School of International Education (SIE) at UIBE organizes competitive sports events for overseas students at the university. Sports meets in commonly played athletic pursuits like volleyball, basketball, and soccer allow the students of the university to come together and forge strong bonds. SIE also works to organize cultural events so as to educate both Chinese and foreign students at the university about the unique points of different cultures across the world.

The School of International Education also organizes several annual activities for overseas students, like the International Cultural Festival, the Laowai Idol singing competition, Chinese Cultural Classes, monthly trips within Beijing City, and sports meets. It also conducts regular lectures and workshops on various important topics, from Chinese calligraphy to local martial arts (e.g., Wushu Sanda), from opera to drama.

The main International Student Associations at UIBE are the International Student Union (ISU), the International Student Volunteer Center, the Debate Association, and the Talents Club. ISU has a robust organizational structure that helps set up regular activities and events, with several Departments including Literature, Physical Education, study, and PR.

UIBE provides extensive career opportunities to its students from the beginning of their degrees, from internships to virtual jobs to full time placements. Industrial partnerships are the main mechanisms by which this is achieved, with industrial visits and internship placements at some of the biggest Chinese and multinational companies. This allows international students to experience the economic situation in China.

The International Career Advisory Center organizes up to ten job fairs primarily for overseas students every year. Through these events, large companies send their representatives to the UIBE campus and take part in recruiting fairs to give part time and full time job fairs to international students of the university.

The UIBE International Alumni Association works to create a powerful global network of graduates of the university to network with each other and access employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. It has six branches in different countries.

Scholarship

The flagship financial aid mechanism at UIBE is the Chinese Government Scholarship. This was established to promote cooperation between China and other countries by allowing talented international students to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University. The financial terms are very generous, with all scholarships under this scheme giving awardees free tuition, accommodation, and medical insurance. There is also a monthly living allowance of RMB 2,500 (undergraduates), RMB 3,000 (Master’s students) or RMB 3,500 (PhD students). Partial scholarships may also be offered, where the tuition fee waiver is usually the only component that is subsidized. Undergraduate recipients must register for courses taught in Chinese (with a preparatory year spent in learning the language to a high degree of proficiency), while postgraduate awardees can choose courses that are taught either in English or in Chinese. The Chinese Government Scholarship has several types:

  • Bilateral Program: For applicants from selected countries which have a bilateral education agreement with the Chinese Government.
  • Chinese University Program: Open to students from all countries; extremely strict academic excellence requirements.
  • Great Wall Program: For applicants from developing countries.
  • EU Program: For undergraduate and postgraduate students from European Union countries.
  • AUN Program: For applicants from the ASEAN Member Nations.
  • PIF Program: For applicants from Pacific Island countries.
  • WMO Program: For excellence students who are pursuing studies in Meteorology, Hydrology, etc.

The Beijing Government Scholarships are offered by the Municipal Government of Beijing City to international students based on academic excellence. Applications are open between February and May each year. These scholarships are offered in two categories: the full scholarship awards a 100% tuition fee waiver, whereas the partial version is usually associated with a 50% tuition fee waiver. The following candidates can apply for this scholarship: overseas students in sound physical and mental health, who abide by the Chinese laws and have no criminal record in any country.

The UIBE scholarships are awarded one or two times a year to international students who display exceptional ability in academics, research, and social impact. There are many different types of awards within this umbrella, for example: outstanding freshmen, academic excellence, progress in studies, excellent graduate students, outstanding student cadres, dedicated activists, scientific research achievements, and research and teaching assistance.

The Confucius Institute Scholarships are awarded to excellent international students who pursue UG or PG studies in subjects related to the Chinese language and culture, and teaching Chinese to Speakers of Foreign Languages. These are sponsored by the Confucius Institute. They award a tuition fee waiver, free accommodation, free medical insurance, and a monthly living allowance.
