Tongji University, established in Shanghai in 1907 as a collaborative effort between Germany and China, is one of the most prestigious universities in the country today. Course Highlight

Tongji University offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses through 29 Colleges and Schools.

  • Two Colleges provide UG and PG taught and research programs in Art and Design: Arts and Media, and Design and Innovation.

There are four State Key Laboratories at the University, where important research problems of relevance to the country are tackled: Disaster Prevention in Civil Engineering, Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, Modern Technology of Urban Planning and Design, and Marine Geology.

Several Institutes and Centers conduct focused research into niche areas - for example, Continuing Education, Asia-Pacific Studies, and the National Engineering Research Center of Urban Pollution Control.

Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate applicants to Tongji University must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Possession of an international passport (non-Chinese citizens).
  • Aged between 18 and 25.
  • Sound physical and mental health.
  • Must submit a notarized scan copy of the interim or final high school degree certificate, with the original hard copy to be submitted after admission.
  • Notarized scans of transcripts of high school courses.
  • HSK Level 5 Certificate of proficiency in the Chinese Language, with a score of at least 180.
  • Personal Statement.
  • Proof of English proficiency (IELTS or TOEFL score; only for courses taught in English).
  • Physical Examination Form for Foreigners.

Postgraduate applicants have similar eligibility criteria; however, the transcripts of undergraduate degree courses are much more detailed, and certain programs may require prerequisite subjects, with a minimum level of academic performance required in each. Full details can be found on the individual course webpages. Degrees like the Master of Business Administration require resumes to be submitted, as well as Letters of Recommendation from academic and professional mentors.

Admission

All international applicants to Tongji University must fill out the online application form. This entails the payment of a non-refundable application fee of RMB 600. Once all the details have been filled, and all the required documents have been submitted, the application is reviewed by the admissions team at Tongji University. Each applicant is judged on their overall capability as shown in their application. The application status changes automatically in the online portal when there is an update. Certain programs may require an online test or interview. When the application status changes to "admitted," the candidate can pay the registration fee and confirm enrollment. 

Students who wish to apply for a scholarship must complete both the main application form and the scholarship process between November 10 of the year prior to the year in which they seek admission, and February 15 of the following year. Students who will pay the full fee have time until April 20 to submit their applications.

In some special cases, applicants may need to furnish additional details - for example, Letters of Recommendation and detailed CVs, or local guardian details in the case of an undergraduate student who is below the age of 18.

Fees

Undergraduate tuition fees for international students studying various types of courses are given below:

  • Liberal Arts: RMB 20,000 (USD 2,912) per year
  • Sciences: RMB 24,600 (USD 3,582) per year
  • Architecture, Medicine, Film: RMB 28,700 (USD 4,179) per year
  • Architecture and Urban Planning: RMB 33,800 (USD 4,921) per year
  • Medicine: RMB 45,000 (USD 6,552) per year

Tuition fees for international students enrolled in Master’s courses range from RMB 22,960 (USD 3,343) per year for Liberal Arts programs, to RMB 104,000 (USD 15,143) per year for the Master of Business Administration degree.

Tuition fees for PhD degrees for international students range from RMB 30,000 (USD 4,368) per year for Liberal Arts Doctoral programs to RMB 68,000 (USD 9,901) per year for the Design International Doctoral degree.

Accommodation costs depend on the type of room (single or shared) and the dormitory. The maximum fees under this heading usually come up to approximately RMB 20,000 per year, with a double room costing half that. Students should also budget for other living costs, including food and travel, which can add up to RMB 2,000 per month.
 

Campus facilities

Tongji University has five campuses: Siping, Jiading, Huxi, Hubei, and the Lingang Base. The main Siping campus is home to over 30,000 students, and contains the administrative buildings as well. It covers an area of nearly 250 acres. The Jiading campus is even larger, and is home to many Engineering Schools. The Huxi Campus contains a hospital and the College of Continuing Education; it is the future home of the School of Medicine. The Hubei campus is the smallest, and is home to about a thousand postgraduate students. The Lingang Base contains several high tech labs related to Marine Science and Technology.

Students at Tongji University pride themselves on building close ties through shared interests in sports, the arts, and student organizations.

Living an active life is central to the Tongji experience. All campuses have indoor badminton and table tennis courts, with several outdoor facilities as well: basketball, soccer, and track and field. Swimming pools, volleyball courts, and tennis courts are also available.

For students who want to keep up with health and fitness activities, the gym allows members of the university to access cardio training areas, weight and functional training rooms, and group fitness and exercise classes.

The University offers support to help students acclimate to college life and deal with difficult times. Counselors on campus work to improve the mental health of students and staff members. In case an international student needs help to improve his or her fluency in the Chinese language, study partners are provided by the University. The Teaching Affairs Office provides support of all kinds to help international students integrate more quickly with the Tongji University community.

The Student Union works with various student clubs and organizations to set up events and entertainment nights for the benefit of everyone in the university community. This provides a great way for the student body to come together and unwind, and student organizations operate in many different areas, from art to sports to community service.

Scholarship

The flagship financial award for International postgraduate students at Tongji University is the Chinese Government Scholarship - High Level Postgraduate Program. This is open to international students studying Master’s and PhD courses where the medium of instruction is Chinese, and is awarded based on academic excellence and potential. The online application comes with an associated fee of 600 RMB, and selected students receive free tuition, on-campus housing, and insurance. There is an additional stipend of RMB 36,000 per year for master's students and RMB 42,000 per year for doctoral students.

The Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship considers international applicants to any course (undergraduate or postgraduate) at Tongji University. Applicants must be in good mental and physical health and display a high level of academic achievement. It is awarded in two categories: Category B entails free tuition and comprehensive medical insurance, whereas Category A awards its winners free tuition, insurance, accommodation, and a yearly stipend that varies according to the type of degree: RMB 30,000 for UG students, RMB 36,000 for Master’s students, and RMB 42,000 for doctoral candidates.

The Marine Scholarship of China is open to postgraduate students from certain countries (African nations and countries around the Pacific and Indian Oceans). It is open to students studying certain marine affairs-related majors, and has a similar award amount to the Chinese Government Scholarship, with all fees waived, and an additional stipend of RMB 36,000 or RMB 42,000 per year awarded.

Other popular financial awards include the Youth of Excellence Scheme of the China Program Chinese Government Scholarship, which is awarded to exceptional students of the International Master's Degree Program in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development.
