Fudan University offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses through 23 Schools and several Departments, Institutes, and Research Centers.
Departments typically supplement the academic and research activities of Schools in related areas of study. For example, Engineering Departments include Environmental Science and Engineering and Mechanics and Engineering Science. In the Humanities, there are Departments like History, Social Sciences, Chinese Language and Literature, and Tourism.
Institutes typically focus on one niche area with important applications; for example, the Institutes of Radiation Medicine, Neurobiology, International Studies, Developmental Biology and Molecular Science, Advanced Study in Social Sciences, Ancient Books Collation and Studies, and Special Purpose Materials and Equipment all conduct advanced research into various crucial disciplines.
Research centers use generous funding (usually from Government sources) to work on complex problems. Examples of these include the Shanghai Municipality Center for Advanced Optics Manufacturing Engineering and Research, the Center for Information and Communication Studies, the Center for Contemporary Foreign Marxism and Foreign Thought Studies, and the Center for American Studies.
The University is also closely affiliated with 17 Hospitals, which collectively provide opportunities for Medical students to gain practical experience in a wide variety of disciplines.
The following entry requirements are common for most international students for most undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Fudan University:
International students must complete the first stage of their application online, through the dedicated online portal. This allows candidates to choose between Undergraduate and Postgraduate options, and then pick the relevant course of interest. After filling all the data required, candidates must upload notarized and certified scanned copies of relevant documents. It is important to submit the documents well before the deadlines (which can be found on course webpages), so that visa and scholarship applications can be completed in advance. The University checks the applications and gets in touch over email with the candidates who are selected.
Many courses have additional selection steps after shortlisting a pool of candidates based on the application form. Courses in Engineering and Medicine usually have a selection test, whereas several courses require applicants to appear for an interview or audition as the final stage before confirmation of admission.
The tuition fee for undergraduate international students at Fudan University varies from course to course. Each program page on the website has details of the application and tuition fees. For example, the Bachelor of Economics course has a tuition fee of 68,000 RMB (9,942 USD) per year. Most UG courses have annual tuition fees that are within 10% of this amount; however, the six year MBBS course fees are substantially higher.
Most courses have one time application fees of 800 RMB (117 USD) per year.
Tuition fees for postgraduate degrees can be found on the individual course webpages, and are typically about 10% higher than the fees for the corresponding undergraduate courses. As an exception, the MBA degree has the highest program fees, at 499,800 RMB (73,078 USD).
Accommodation costs range from 200 RMB (29 USD) to 250 RMB (36 USD) per day, which translates to a maximum of $10,800 per year, assuming ten months are spent on campus. Students should also budget for food, travel, and personal costs, all of which sum to a fraction of the total accommodation cost given above.
Fudan University has four campuses in the city of Shanghai: Handan, Jiangwan, Fenglin, and Zhangjiang. The main Handan campus is home to most of the academic buildings and housing units: it has extensive green spaces as well as modern buildings. The Jiangwan campus, located close to Handan, aims to reduce the academic load on the main campus, with several Schools planned to relocate to Jiangwan. The Zhangjiang Campus is home to many high-tech Schools, from Microelectronics to Software. Finally, most of the Medical courses at Fudan University are taught at the Fenglin campus.
The first overseas campus of Fudan University is planned to be set up in Hungary in 2024.
Student life at Fudan University is vibrant, with five large historical museums and a theater helping to keep the spirit of art and culture alive. Academic and extracurricular facilities are world-class, with the main library (which is split into five sub-libraries) housing nearly six million volumes.
In addition to the student clubs that allow members of Fudan University to pursue their interests in the fields of arts, sports, languages, and fitness, there are also sixteen officially recognized international student associations. Most of these are for students from different nationalities that are prominently represented within the University student body (for example, Russia, Malaysia, and Korea), but there are also Dancing clubs, Archery and Shooting Clubs, and the Fudan Detective Association, for fans of mystery fiction.
Sports, health, and fitness are very important aspects of life at Fudan University. Each of the four campuses has a prominent center for physical activities, from the huge Zhengda Stadium in Handan (the main hub of fitness, group exercise, and indoor sports activities), to the Sports Field in the Jiangwan Campus (where outdoor sports are played), to the Comprehensive Swimming Pool in the Fenglin Campus (that has Olympic level aquatic facilities), to the Gymnasium in the Zhangjiang Campus.
These are not the only sports facilities at Fudan University, with the Handan campus in particular containing several outdoor areas and fields dedicated to particular sports: including football fields, track and field arenas, tennis courts, swimming pools, and table tennis rooms.
Fudan University places an emphasis on career preparedness and job training across all departments. To this end, it organizes regular information sessions and seminars, industrial training modules, and job interview and resume training. The MBA program, in particular, is one of the most prestigious and successful degrees of its kind in Asia, with graduates of the School of Management placed in the largest companies in China and across the world.
There are three main scholarships for international students at Fudan University: the Chinese Government Scholarship, the Shanghai Government Scholarship, and the Confucius Institute Scholarship.
The first two scholarships require students to have an excellent academic record, respect for China and its culture, and a clear past personal history. Selected students will receive a partial or full tuition fee waiver with the possibility of a living stipend as well, depending on whether the full or partial scholarship is awarded.
The Confucius Institute Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students pursuing certain degrees related to Chinese language, literature, and culture.
Students who have been awarded one of these scholarships must maintain a certain minimum level of academic performance throughout. They must register for their scholarships every semester, and submit monthly feedback and performance forms.
There are also other prestigious scholarships awarded by external organizations. For example, the IBM Scholarship, the China Development Bank Scholarship, the Fudan Boxue Scholarship, and the Confucius Institute Belt and Road Scholarship are awarded to students who show excellence in research activities and / or extracurricular activities, and the University releases notices about the application process for these awards from time to time.
