It uses its historical record of innovation success, world class research facilities, and sustainable principles to solve some of the world’s most challenging problems.

Student life at NCL is vibrant; with more than 28,000 students enrolled across campus locations in Newcastle, Singapore, and Malaysia, it is one of the most international Universities in the UK. The Students’ Union conducts events and manages societies to cater to various interest groups. It is also highly ranked, featuring among the top 140 Universities worldwide in the 2026 QS University Rankings.

Usp Of Institution

NCL focuses on research to an exceptional extent, as one of the founding members of the elite Russell Group. Specifically, the aim of its students and researchers is to make the world a better place, with significant results in anti-aging, data science, and robotics. The University is home to 19 Centers of Research Excellence, which carry out groundbreaking work in Water, Cancer, Climate & Environmental Resilience, Biomedical Engineering, Human Nutrition & Exercise Research, Mobility & Transport, and Industrial Biotechnology.

In 2025, NCL was awarded 5 QS stars for research, and engages with the community extensively, with almost a million people attending its outreach events in 2025 alone. Collaboration is a recurring theme, with the Newcastle Helix innovation district bringing together high impact researchers from multiple countries and fields.

This research is also carried out sustainably, in line with the United Nations SDGs. Newcastle University’s ranking on sustainability is significantly higher (#64 worldwide) as compared to its overall ranking.

Renowned Alumni

Alumni of Newcastle University have a proven track record of success across sectors. From famous crime authors to space scientists, and social entrepreneurs to TV Chefs, graduates of the University share their stories of triumph on the NCL website.

Students of the University can sign up to connect with other alumni on the website soon after they graduate. This allows them to connect and network with more than 280,000 ex-students of Newcastle University based in 180+ countries. There are automated and customized options to allow alumni to connect with others working in the same field or living in the same area, ensuring long term professional growth.

Laboratory

NCL is home to 34 laboratories that provide undergraduate and graduate students with cutting edge equipment with 24x7 access. These combine traditional fields (e.g. X-Ray Diffraction, Marine Science & Technology) with more modern disciplines (e.g. Human Developmental Biology). They are a crucial factor in supporting Newcastle University’s status as one of the top research locations in the world.

Newcastle Innovations facilities also have access to state of the art laboratories and clinical facilities. This supports the high paced nature of medical and technological innovation. They are also staffed with equipment experts and business experts to facilitate monetization of ideas.

Campus Life

The Newcastle University campus is located in a central area of the city of Newcastle, ensuring easy access to external amenities. For example, it is within 30 minutes of both the train station and the city airport. It is also a green campus, with multiple parks and open spaces within the University limits. There is ample space for student-run clubs, events, and other on-campus activities.

A notable feature of student life on the NCL campus is how safe it is. The University has invested in CCTV across both indoor and outdoor areas, with a dedicated shift-wise porterage service at all the Halls of Residence. There are also security staff and emergency numbers that are available around the clock. The SafeZone app can also be used to flag first aid or help alerts.

At any given time, there are students from more than 130 countries on the Newcastle University campus. This ensures that they can easily find others from similar cultural backgrounds, adding to diversity and easing the settling-in process.

Incubation & Idea Lab

Newcastle Innovations is the department that brings budding entrepreneurs and industry experts together. This allows students within the NCL ecosystem who wish to turn their ideas into reality to access funding, expertise, and innovation depth in fields that are still nascent. It also creates a strong pool of knowledge in terms of patents, intellectual property, and allows students and researchers to earn from their ideas while still supporting further infrastructure at the University.

Newcastle University therefore allows incubation of companies to happen at every level, and gives members of the NCL ecosystem access to corporate know-how that would otherwise be inaccessible or expensive. This is especially important in the tech and healthcare sectors, which have traditionally had high barriers to entry because of equipment costs.

Health Services

The Student Health and Wellbeing Services department at Newcastle University ensures that all students and faculty members of NCL have access to physical and mental health resources at all times, both day-to-day and emergency assistance. For example, the website has a disability support form where students can request help for access to academic and recreational spaces. There are also measures taken to support neurodiverse students and those living with autism. The University also provides options for students to request funding if their conditions require them to invest in mobility support or medical care.

Counseling and therapy services are available free of cost to all students enrolled at Newcastle University. This is typically one on one, and students can access these services through appointments for both ongoing issues that they wish to discuss, or for emergency mental health services, in which case the on-campus counselors may refer the student to psychiatrists. The former are available during work hours on weekdays, but there are also 24x7 emergency support services. Through all these, Newcastle University proves that it is a truly compassionate forward-looking higher education institution, with student welfare at the center of all decisions made by the management.

Gender & Sexuality

Newcastle University provides support and resources to LGBTQ+ students who are either navigating their identities or wish to find a supportive community. The University has a dedicated LGBTQ+ Officer and safe spaces, ensuring that all students can feel welcome and not excluded from any part of academic or student life.

There is also a student run society (the LGBTQ+ Community) that provides support at all levels, helping reduce discrimination. It is managed directly by the Students’ Union and works with the authorities to bring timely help whenever needed. It also creates projects and media celebrating equality and showcasing queer spaces.

Unsdg For He

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are essential points to keep in mind for any world class educational institution. Newcastle University incorporates these SDGs into every facet of their courses, research methodology, support for students, and infrastructure.

The Global Challenges Academy at Newcastle University works towards achieving high scores on the UN SDGs by bringing together researchers from NCL and abroad to work on interdisciplinary problems that will impact multiple vulnerable groups around the world in the near future. As a member of the UN’s Academic Impact Initiative, NCL has been presenting at international forums for a decade, and has carried out pathbreaking work in biodiversity research which currently informs policy making at a global level.
