Overview

Stanley Medical College is one of the oldest and famous centers in the country in the field of medical education. The college was established in 1740 when the East India Company first created the medical department. The Stanley Hospital now locates on the earlier site of the Monegar Choultry which was established in 1780.

As the name suggests, the College is associated with the famous Government Stanley Hospital which has a capacity of1280 beds for in-patient treatment. The hospital also has a capacity of an out-patient attendance of around 5000 patients per day. The unique feature is its 8-storied surgical complex is able to perform up to 40 surgeries simultaneously, a modern 7 storied medicine complex and a separate pediatrics block having all specialties under one umbrella.

Academic Performance

The college has been allotted with 250 MBBS seats by MCI from 2013 onwards. Along with that, they have around 20 postgraduate courses with MD and MS specialization. Apart from that they also hold PG diploma courses, PG super specialty courses and paramedical courses as well. The academic capacity of the institution lies across 36 departments in the medical college, which can provide immense exposure to the students in the field of medicine as well in their specialization.

Admissions eligibility is only to Indian citizens, and are, by default, highly competitive. Admissions for the MBBS program are based on NEET. Several seats in post-graduate programs are in fact reserved for physicians who are in Government service.

Since the bed capacity of the medical college is big enough, it never failed to give the best experience to their students. One of the key highlights is Yoga and Naturopathy lifestyle clinic in Govt. Stanley Hospital which has started functioning from October 2014 onwards. Patients are taught with various yogic practices in order to improve their general health and for various diseases. The medical college and the hospital have a Centre of Excellence for Hand as well as Reconstructive Microsurgery unit and a separate cadaver maintenance unit which is first of its kind in the country.

Notable Alumni

Padma Vibhushan Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, the cardiologist entrepreneur, founder of the first corporate chain of hospitals in India, the Apollo Hospitals is a proud alumnus of Stanley Medical College. Padma Bhushan V.S. Ramachandran, the neuroscientist famous for his theories and experiments in behavioral neurology and invention of the mirror box obtained his M.B.B.S. from Stanley Medical College. Padma Shri Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy, popularly known as “Dr. V”, the ophthalmologist who dedicated his life to eradicating needless blindness received his medical degree from the College, graduating second in his class in 1944. Dr. Mohamed Rela considered one of the world’s best liver transplant surgeons and known for his HPB surgery obtained his MBBS in 1980 and MS degree from Stanley. Dr. Rela has performed over 4500 transplants, including one on a 5-day old baby, that earned him a spot in the Guinness Book of records in 2000. Stunt Silva, the Tamil stunt actor who is an actor, director and stunt coordinator across all of the regional industries in the Indian film scene has trained as a nurse from Stanley Medical College. Padma Shri Arunan Rajasekaran, the pioneer of male infertility therapy, graduated in medicine from Stanley. Padma Vibhushan Balu Sankaran who helped establish an artificial limb manufacturing corporation graduated with a medical degree from the College in 1948.
