S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Science which is also abbreviated as SNBNCBS is located in Salt Lake, Kolkata, West Bengal. This is an autonomous research institute that focuses on basic research on mathematical sciences of the Government of India under the Department of Science and Technology. This university was named after the great scientist Satyendra Nath Bose and SNBNCBS was established in the year 1986. The main objectives of S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences are “to foster, encourage and promote the growth of advanced studies in selected branches of basic science, to conduct original research in theoretical and mathematical sciences and other basic science in frontier areas, including challenging theoretical studies of future applications, to provide a forum of personal contacts and intellectual interaction among scientist within the country and also between them and scientist abroad and to train young scientists for research in basic sciences”.

Academic Performance

S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Science, Kolkata is a research institute. So, mainly Ph.D. programmes are offered by this institute. Since 2001, an Integrated Ph.D. program has been started but after a student has completed two years of study in M.Sc., a degree is given by the University of Calcutta, however, formerly the degree was being given by West Bengal University of Technology. The students from this institute can submit their individual Ph.D. thesis to other universities that they are allowed to, such as the Jadavpur University, West Bengal University of Technology, University of Calcutta, etc.

There are several courses and units offered which are Thematic Unit of Excellence on Computational Material Science, Thematic Unit of Excellence on Nanodevice Technology, Unit of Nanoscience & Technology, and Technical Research Centre. Different departments of this university are Astrophysics & Cosmology, Chemical Biological & Macro-Molecular Sciences, Condensed Matter Physics and Material Sciences, and Theoretical Sciences. Academic programmes that are offered by this institution are Intergraded Ph.D., Ph.D. in Physical Science, Ph.D. in Chemical Science, and Project in Research Programmes.

Research and Development 

S.N Bose National Centre of Basic Sciences has done several research projects and have major research areas as Astrophysics & Cosmology (Quantum Optics Information theory, Cosmology, Observational & Experimental Astrophysics, Astrophysics around black holes), Chemical, Biological & Macro-Molecular Sciences (Study of complex molecular and hybrid systems using Experiments and Simulations).

It also has other research areas like ultrafast spectroscopy techniques and ultrasensitive spectroscopy techniques, Condensed Matter Physics and Material Sciences (theoretical and computational studies on Physics of materials), experimental studies on Physics of materials, nanolithography (from Nano dimension to bulk and advanced devices), Theoretical Sciences (gravity, cosmology, quantum field theory, granular physics, lattice gauge theory, cognitive science, nonlinear physics, statistical physics, and mathematical physics).

These are the areas in which SNBNCBS has done extensive research, and the institution is imparting the research findings and knowledge to its students and allowing the students to bring out their innovation to the practical world and see things change around them. This institute not only helps its students but also acts as a catalyst to explore ideas and imagination that students have inside them.
