In the year 1972, the Institute of Physics (IoP), Bhubaneswar was established by the Government of Odisha. It is an autonomous research institute which is co-funded by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the Government of Odisha. It is a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and was registered in the year 1972. The institute started its operations in the year 1994 in two rented rooms of a guest house atUtkal University under the directorship of Professor T. Pradhan. The academic activities of the institute began in January of 1975 when the institute was shifted to a rented house in Sahid Nagar area in Bhubaneswar. The institute continued to function in the rented house from 1974 till 1981 with two faculties apart from the director himself and in 1981 moved to their current campus. The institute was taken over by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) in the year 1985.
The institute offers various facilities of housing and hostels for the employees and scholars respectively around its campus. For the benefit of post-doctoral fellows and visitors, various apartments with compact efficiency have also been built. Regarding sports facilities, provisions for both indoor and outdoor games have been made available inside the campus including a gymnasium. Other facilities include a guest house, dispensary facility inside the campus and an auditorium, are also available for the benefit of the students and scholars.
IoP, Bhubaneswar’s academic performance has been great throughout the years and the students have shown great results and performances. Institute of Physics (IOP) is an important center for research based on Theoretical and Experimental physics. Under theoretical physics, research has been carried out on nuclear and high energy physics, and condensed matter theory. Under experimental physics, accelerator-based research has been undertaken at IoP for advanced chemical and radioisotope analysis. Over the decades, scholars have done excellent work in their respective fields and have published impressive research that has helped in the advancement of scientific temperament in the country.
The Institute of Physics (IoP) offers a Doctoral programme which leads to a Ph.D. degree which is awarded by the HBNI (Homi Bhabha National Institute). The scholars who have completed M. Sc. degree in Physics from a recognized institute and have also gained marks above a cut-off grade, which is decided each year, in JEST or CSIR-NET or GATE examinations are asked to appear for a test and an interview is conducted towards the final stage of the selection process. The areas of research which are present in the institute are categorized and divided into:
- High Energy Physics
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Nuclear Physics
At the institute, research is conducted in each of the aforementioned areas under both theoretical and experimental physics.
Scholars with a Ph.D. degree from the institute should be able to apply in universities for a career in academics and with a Ph.D. from a reputed institute like IoP would give an extra edge to the candidates in their career path.
