The Institute of Hotel Management, IHM, is situated in Mumbai. The institute is the first of its kind in South East Asia and it was established in1954 by All India Women’s Central Food Council. It was under the leadership of Late Smt. Lilavati Munshi.
Late Smt. Lilavati Munshi with another group of courageous women that included Smt. Homi J H Taleyarkhanas well as Smt. Leela N Jog established a chain of Annapoornas (restaurants) under the name of All India Women’s Central Food Council throughout the nation. It was but primarily in the metropolitan cities in order to prepare and sell economic but at the same time, nutritionally sound snacks as well as foods.
The main purpose of the institute was to improve the nutritional status of the average human from a high cereal diet to a much more balanced diet. The critical factor however was to find out the trained personnel to run these restaurants on a self-financing basis. That actually gave birth to the concept of IHM Mumbai.
Hotel Management and Catering Technology was still a very young program in our country in those days, even in the West. Even the school of Hotel Administration of the University of Cornell was bifurcated from the Department of Home Economics as a separate faculty only in 1954.
IHM, Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition, was the first of its kind in the country to start a Diploma in Hotel Management course. Today IHM, Mumbai is reckoned to be the number ONE Institute in Hospitality Education throughout the nation. The Institute has the honor of being awarded the Award of Excellence, several times, for the Best Tourism Educational Institute from the Ministry of Tourism, GoI.
The institute offers various other academic programs for their students as well. Such as BSc Degree in Hospitality & Hotel Administration, 3 Years of BSc Degree in Hospitality as well as Hotel Administration, 12 weeks Certificate Course in Cookery, Diploma in Food Production, 12 weeks Certificate Course in Bakery,
